That's why he makes the big bucks. He's a never ending stream of originality.
He's the head clown for a clown nation.
I unclog my nose in his general direction and wonder if his father stank of elderberries.

I love the way the Zep guys handled him after their big honor show that had Obama there. With ill-concealed disregard. And this was after spending a evening with him. Perhaps that's where they formed their opinion of him. Jonesy was great.

David has made a living hosting flavor-of-the-moment nobodies and very forgettable people. Next.

Zeppelin were and are giants. And they toyed with him like they were. Loved it.

The running drum gag is a ritual much as is Letterman sprinting full speed all the way across the stage during the show open a few seconds before more casually strolling out. After the musical act is complete he sometimes throws in a "Nice guitar there" along with the drum comment.

Extremely little known facts, that probably only I know (some of which I wish I didn't.) "Late Show" announcer Alan Kalter has worked in the Ed Sullivan Theater far longer than Letterman. He was the announcer for "To Tell The Truth," "The $10,000 Pyramid" and "The $128,000 Question" all of which were done at the Ed during their CBS runs going back to the early 1970's. Almost nobody knows that Kalter's job prior to announcing for CBS game shows was as a high school English teacher at Long Island's Baldwin High School in the late 1960's. (The school is not named after Alec Baldwin.) He had done radio prior to teaching and continued part time local radio during his tenure at Baldwin High. Kalter replaced original "Late Show" announcer Bill Wendell. (Wendell had an equally long run going back to side-kicking/announcing for 1950's comedic legend Ernie Kovacs.) In addition to his work at CBS, Kalter was also long time voice of the USA cable channel during USA's early days. You can still hear Kalter on the the brief disclaimer that runs prior to infomercials on USA, but that is all of his voice they still use.

I've never been much of a Letterman fan. Leno either. I like the 2 Jimmy's and curious to see Arsenio Hall's new show in the fall.

Johnny Carson lived 13 years after his retirement at age 67. He retired in 1992, dying at age 80 in 2005. While he did have a DWI conviction (driving his DeLorean at the time) he was not what I'd call a drunk. He liked the sauce though for sure and even wrote a book titled, "Happiness is a Dry Martini" back in the 1960's.

It was Johnny Carson's chain smoking that killed him, not alcohol. Cause of death was respiratory failure due emphysema. Even though it may have looked like he stopped smoking in the 70's, he actually just stopped smoking on camera.

Johnny Carson was many things including magician, amateur astronomer, sailor, tennis devotee and amateur musician. He was by all accounts an excellent amateur drummer and kept his favorite Rogers kit, a gift from Buddy Rich, set up at his home at all times. He played routinely after coming in from work. He played along to recorded jazz tracks on a big stereo system. While you might have pictured him going out for dinner or drinks with a crowd of friends after a show, the notoriously anti-social Carson went home to play his drums instead. After retiring from NBC he made several good investments and a few bad ones. He opened a restaurant which failed, bought a few TV stations and continued his men's clothing line, continued his devotion to tennis and as was learned later he became a ghost joke writer. Prior to his retirement he was a major investor in DeLorean Motor Company which collapsed when John Delorean was arrested for dealing cocaine. The Delorean debacle might be why Carson kept working a bit longer than most expected. He didn't retire and then drink himself to death.

Some people aren't Letterman fans, however Johnny Carson was and considered Letterman his pick for his spot on "The Tonight Show." Not only was Carson's final TV appearance on Letterman, but even more telling of his appreciation of Letterman was the fact that Carson was an uncredited ghost joke writer for him for years. That was a closely guarded secret that didn't come out until shortly before Carson's death when word leaked out about it from a Letterman staffer to the NY Times. That's right. Carson was feeding jokes to Letterman for many years, and he was doing it for free.

To tell the truth, not everyone liked Carson either. He had some formidable enemies, including Wayne Newton. Friends of Carson's known to have found themselves frozen out of his "circle of trust" overnight include Joan Rivers and John Davidson. Once out, you never ever got back in. You have to respect Carson for his charity though, he was the most charitable of anyone in LA show business. To this day his John W. Carson Foundation is the largest charity in Hollywood. The Johnny Carson School of Theater and Film at the University of Nebraska was founded with a huge gift from Carson while there were many other scholarships and donations to schools.

Arsenio Hall is a bankrupt 57 year old man. He listed just $765 in assets against debts exceeding $190,000 in 2008 bankruptcy papers. Therefore I predict he'll work like crazy and do a great job on his new syndicated talk show. This is probably his last chance. He'll certainly not get the youth demos he got in the 80's this time out.

I liked Dennis Miller on his short run on late night TV.

I like him too. I enjoyed his HBO specials even more because he wasn't as stiff and didn't seem as scared to death.

I was always a big fan of Dennis Miller,he was never fawning or sycophantic with his more famous guests as some talk show hosts have been known to be and I was really impressed by his acerbic sardonic wit.I'd really like for him to come back on the air.

Thank you BrotherDave for a great short piece on J.Carson. I clearly missed my calling as a misinformed tabloid writer. Oops!

Not sure if your excellent report would have emerged with out my oafishness. That's the the ticket. I knew you would respond with something brilliant and informed if I put up something bone-headed, so I wrote that tawdry post. Yeah, that's the ticket!.

Thanks again for keeping one of the classiest acts in show business in the light of some dignity. As someone who only knows too well the ravages of alcohol, and the sickness it can bring, I unfortunately got some lines crossed and some things just wrong..

I don't like everything he ever did, and I think he's lost his edge long ago, but when he first came on the scene, Letterman was hilarious, at least to youngsters like me who didn't find Carson's constantly recycled bits and Ed's brown-nosing "h'yuck h'yuck h'yuck" particularly funny.

Me too! He often sent me diving for dictionary.com to look up some obscure word he'd plucked out of that immense vocabulary of his. However I think he's waiting on his film career to take off again with "Bordello Of Blood II" or a "Joe Dirt" sequel before venturing back to the tube.
