I highly recommend the JCM 800, 1960AV and 1960BV speaker cabs. It's enough amp to stop you playing bass.

^^ JCM 800 what can you say? superb that's all! 8)

John Fogerty still uses the old rolled vinyl Kustom amp that he used on the first CCR album when doing the songs on tour.He also uses his original Rickenbacker with a Gibson humbucker and it also has a Bigsby replacing the standard Rickenbacker vibrato arm. These old Kustoms were extremely sturdy and were great sounding-as early CCR recordings are proof of this. They come up on ebay pretty regularly for much less than other amps of their vintage.

I saw the one YouTube video of his concert where he used the Kustom for one song and then it seemed to immediately disappear from the stage. So I think he's trying to extend it's life as long as possible.

So .... why did they use them then? Surely they had the money for what they really wanted. :| Santana's famous Woodstock performance was on a SS amp, doesn't get much more iconic than that. Maybe he needed something reliable that could get a little rain on it and still work? Or maybe that amp just plain sounded good.

I had a blue Kustom that sounded soft and fat..but I wouldn't call it sturdy. Only one layer of plywood for a speaker box. It was light, which was nice.

Thanks for the info about the Mustang. That's good to know.

Yeah, I will say a Marshall JCM 800 is a nice rig. I had a friend who had one. I wouldn't mind a VBA 400 bass amp, if I were to go the Marshall route and had that kind of money. Of course, if you're going there, then there's Hi Watts. Then there's Reeves, speaking of Hi Watts. That's all out of my price point, right now. Besides, I'm more interested in a combo, which is more practical for me at the moment. Speaking of solid state combos, I've also like the Roland JC 120, or other Roland amps.

I guess the problem is that there's so much stuff out there. Then again, that probably isn't a bad thing. It's that damned G.A.S. :P

He was probably too stoned to know any difference back then. In fact i know they were as i remember reading that when they were onstage the were flying.

So if SS amps are as good why does he play Boogies?

Virtually no top rock or blues players use SS amps. It must be like 99% use tube amps. That's not an accident. SS amps are horrible cranked up, the way most blues and rock players like to play. Yes i can see a Jazz player liking a SS amp because they generally don't go for a really distorted sound.

What would you rather play? I bet it's a tube amp.

What may sound horrible to you, might sound good to others. What a concept!

SS amps have come a long way.

I don't know, maybe it's me, but this sounds good to me. It never occurred to me that this would be anything but a tube amp. Score one for talent.

All you can hear on that is the Big Muff prototype he played through being manipulated by the volume control. Even when he cleans it up it's a horrible raspy sound if you ask me.

Yep, output transformers gone, all four el34's. The fuse even shot across the kitchen.
