I am going to play contrarian … A significant contributor of one’s tone DEFINITELY comes from the fingers alone. No doubt about it. It is because of this that we are even having this discussion. Yes, it definitely defies logical thought … the tone – theoretically – should only be related to the guitar-to-speaker signal chain. What the brain hears and interprets as “tone” actually (without us realizing it) incorporates elements of the player. This happens whether we want it to or not; whether we try to separate it out or not. That is why tone-chasing is a losers game. You can have the same pickups, same guitar, same effects, same amp, and same speakers … and it sounds nothing like so and so’s tone. Why is that?? Because there are elements in the player that the brain will interpret as tone. A classic example is Joe Walsh … simple rig, but very unique tone. If you played his rig, it would instantly sound very ordinary …

Style determines how you sound

Would have thought that was basic knowledge

Take a sun bath to improve your tone.

Just because you have the same gear as someone does not mean your settings are 100% the same, and i have heard many of the same amps sound different out of the box, not sure why, but it's a fact. all guitars are not 100% the same either, different grains in the wood, maybe 1 more winding on the pickup, modded hardware, and strings, so even though you have the same stuff, yours may be slightly different.
I have seen strat players using single coil pups, trying to get a LP sound, never going to happen, so it helps to know what tone your looking before you start your search for it.
and not everybody hears the same, some are just plain tone def.
I have seen thousands of dollars of gear going to waste, while someone with very little money invested sounds amazing....
and i'm not talking about playing style, or talent, just raw tone of the guitar / amp.

Guitars and amps are ridiculously the same when recorded. The vast majority of people (including myself) can't hear the difference between a Les Paul and a Telecaster once it's been through the rack, into the desk, onto the PC then mixed, then re-eq'd then mastered.

Nope Weekend off this Weekend. Just done 6 weeks 12 gigs, need a rest. Need to talk about some stuff, need to write some songs. Need to buy a van (yyyaaaaaaaaayyyYy). Need to paint a van. Need to set a new plan of action into place. Been offered a few gigs round the south coast, looking to make a week of it and cross the channel into France whilst we're down there.
Need to give the amps a service. The vocalists amp blew up and he was using my 2nd (Blackstar). I've just switched from KT88 valves to EL34's in mine last week. And need to keep an eye on it. Make sure it's settling in OK cos I only altered the bias feed and not the screen grid. (massive bass)

Which I think I'm going to do now. Any excuse to get the multimeter and screwdrivers out and then glare at glowing bottles.
