From classical guitar, to electric on a chair to standing up.

Do you mind it very much if when strapping a guitar on
it hangs too high or too low?

I fuzzed about it, until I realized the right height for me
is when the top left of the back cover on my Strat
is right on my belly button.

I used to strap it a bit higher, kind of like Robert Cray does,
but I´ve gone down a bit, feels like I can -lean in- on some passages,
whereas higher up I just tended to lay back on my spine, getting lumbar stress.

Lower than this, my left wrist just poops out.

Here´s what I mean, :D

I don't like those guitarists that wear it at a certain height cause they want the image it represents to relate to them. Kinda like, all the 'indie hipsters' douchebags wear it extremely high, like up to their neck, and have the headstock pointing down, where I live atleast. It sh1ts me so much. I ask them, 'why the hell do you wear your guitar that high?', and they're like, 'I dunno, it's indie'. I want to punch them in the nose.

Sorry for the rant, just popped into my head when I saw this thread.

The question, well I don't really mind any height. I prefer it so you can very easily get the guitar on and off and start playing straight away, I think that's pretty cool. But I don't really mind.

At my age I'm pretty persnickety about everything, including the length of my guitar strap. This is about optimum for me......

I use the same strap (un-adjusted) when playing a Les Paul.

Arjay

Arjay, when you use the word "Persnickety" you don't have to tell people your old  ...I guess i'm not too far behind you as I TOTALLY got the meaning of what you said!

Now back to your regular programming...I wear mine about the same height as Arjay...I can't stand it when I see schmucks doing the Jimmy Page, I didn't even like that when Jimmy did it as that just can't be comfortable to play :!:

Well, I didn't realize it, but I guess I'm an indie hipster douchebag! I adjust my strap to be the same height sitting down and standing. Which ends up being a bit high when I stand. I thank Mike Bloomfield for making that okay. I guess he may have been the original indie hipster douchebag. If I was into tattoos I'd get one with that saying, but I'm not! :P

That's about where I have my bass. Pretty much the same distance when sitting.

I just put it where it's most comfy. Not too high, not too low.

Low. Guild S-70's contours+weight+scale+balance make it super comfortable.

I also keep mine about medium height, just slightly lower than it would be if I were sitting. Not a style issue -- that's simply where it feels most comfortable. If my guitar hangs too low my fretting-hand wrist starts to hurt.

Here´s Roy Buchanan,

"Kieff" & Ron, -I could do the low bar dance wearing it this low

Trivium,

Guthrie, this looks comfortable, thinking of my lumbar injury

Vince Gill,

Beck,

Eric and Robert Cray, this one very illustrative on that "height sweet spot" for each one,

I keep mine in the middle, not too low, not too high. I think what's comfortable is different for everyone, but my wrists hurt in sympathetic pain when I see guys with their guitars down to their knees. :x

I have to keep it pretty high, myself. otherwise my wrist cramps terribly. I have to keep it where my wrist is straight as possible.

People who play my guitars usually comment that I play it low but who is to say what's high and what's low? Use whatever is comfy for you.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Until this thread I don't think I've given this much thought. I guess I've always hung the guitar where it feels most comfortable and where I can reach every fret with minimal effort. As to "where" exactly, I would say a little higher than BG and a little lower than RC.

Cheers!
