If that were my bass, I'd throw tortoise shell on it.

Nice acquisition, I like the idea of a pan control. But since I'm aesthetically challenged, i won't voice an opinion on the pickguard.

Very nice bass-- I'd leave it stock and untouched. I'd like to play one of those. I know the feeling of being at work and wanting to be at home jammin on my new bass. Nice.

I've been waiting to see an American Deluxe with a standard Jazz Bass body.

Nice bass--I love J-Basses--I would leave the black guard on--I like the way they look.
Pearloid , tortoiseshell and ivoroid type pickguards always look cheap to me.
And I like black pickguards.

I kinda get a "take that, sadowsky" vibe from that Deluxe Jazz.

I hadn't thought of that but you're right!

Good one!

Nice piece of wood. My wife can't figure out why I'm usually ordering some kind of burst finish. Other than my Gilmour and my Clapton, everything else I've ever owned had a wood grain pattern one could appreciate. Enjoy.

OK, at Frank's request I am posting this rough draft of a bass line I am trying to put together for an original song the guitar player wrote called Oneupmanship. The song itself is fairly simple and has a kind of early 90's Seattle feel to it. Because it's simple they wanted a fairly busy bass line to go with it and this is what I've come up with so far. My main instrument is guitar so don't bust my balls too hard for the sloppy playing. This is the file I am submitting as a proposed bass line for the song. It contains all the elements in the song so the rest of it is just repeats of these parts.

Oneupmanship

The US Deluxe J deserves both rosewood and maple fingerboards no matter the finish and tonewoods available.

Fender did a rosewood neck natural American Deluxe Ash Jazz a couple of years ago in the form of a special edition run.

Beautiful Bass! I'd go with the black abalone for the exact same reasons you cited. Another unstated option is to give the stock pg to an artist. Then put the original pg with new art back on. :) I'm all for originality.
