New MXR Pedal Day!

I had a gift certificate that was burning a hole in my wallet, so I went to check out the new MXR M69 Prime Distortion pedal.

It’s a limited-edition-sold-exclusively-at-Guitar Center, much like the MXR M66 Classic Overdrive and MXR M86 Classic Distortion (both of which I own).

Anyway, this coincides with a conversation I had with a member of the Screamin’ Armadillos (the band). Since I moved back to the DFW area, we are about to reunite and start rehearsing again. He hoped we could get a little harder, lo-fi sound—a bit more White Stripes-y or Black Keys-y. I agreed, and started checking out some equipment with a harder-edged sound, but still within the Screamin’ Armadillos lexicon.

The MXR M86 Classic Distortion was a nice pedal, but it sounded like crap with single coils; that’s the reason it’s not on the Big Ol’ Board of Sonic Delight. I have one guitar with humbuckers (see below), but it’s not my main axe, nor will I stop using my Strat and Tele…so I needed something with more oomph than the TS9 and M66 Classic Overdrive, but still sounded good with single coils.

Thus far, this seems to fit the bill. Like all distortion pedals, it gets a bit messy when a full chord is played, so I’ll have to be careful there. It sounded like crap when I played slide with it (which is a big part of my playing).
It has not completely earned a permanent spot on the BOBoSD quite yet…but since a shake-up is impending, it will definitely be on the short list.
So here’s some sound samples:

1995 MIM Fender Tele Special (modded to become the Screamin’ Armadillos Signature Telecaster):

1980 G&L F100 (dead stock, my first electric guitar):

1992 Fender ’62 Reissue Stratocaster (with Pete Biltoft Vintage Vibe SP-90 pickups):

Conclusion:

As I said earlier, it sounded best when I was playing only single-string stuff, and it mixed pretty well with the Crybaby Wah. Overall, it sounds good, it looks cool (love the pinstripes!!) and it was dang near free (which is important to an unemployed guy such as myself). I’ll see what I think about it with further use…at first blush, I like it but I don’t quite loooove it…we’ll see how it mixes with the rest of the band.

What do y’all think?

I guess nobody else is that impressed with it...

Still messing around with it, I like the Billy Gibbons-esque sounds it gives me--kinda rich and punchy and Marshall-y.

You mean all those years that I wasn't attractive to the fairer sex, I just needed a simple distortion pedal with some pinstripes? Dang it!

Maybe you need to run to Guitar Center--you'll have supermodels and cheerleaders dribbling off you like stink off a skunk! :P

Congrats SA! A little gratification is in order now and then!
Very interested to learn how this mxr suits single coils as you get to know it...

Glad to hear of the band reunion. :D

Exhaustive, in depth analysis, what more could anyone ask for. I hope the pedal grows on you. It sounds good, but I didn't hear any tone that reminded me of a particular recording. I had a similar experience last week. I bought another GC exclusive, the Mad Professor 1, which is a distortion pedal with reverb. After a week I've decided it's a nice pedal if I was playing for Ozzie, and I'll probably use it some day, but I just don't need that much crunch. Unfortunately it wasn't real cheap like yours, so I'm licking my wounds on that one.

Congratulations SA, sounds like a good fit for your style of music. I can almost hear some Gibbons-ish riffs already. And that orange '62 RI Strat is a real beauty. 8)
