Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Actually--according to Fred Gretsch--the family still owns the company after they bought it back, but they have a distribution arrangement/agreement with Fender.

So Fender looks after distribution, etc, but the Gretsch family still owns the company.
fender certainly has a lot of input into what happens in this arrangement, but it isn't accurate to say that Fender owns Gretsch.

I asked him this in person when he did a tour and stopped at a local guitar store--just to clear that up from the horse's mouth, so to speak.

This information is accurate to the best of my knowledge. It is Fender's parent corporation, FMIC, that distributes Gretsch and has for the past 10 years starting in 2003. The Gretsch brand though is still owned by people with the last name Gretsch. Also Gretsch still outright owns Bigsby Vibratos and Sho-Bud Pedal Steel Guitars.

For a while from 1967 till 1985 Baldwin owned Gretsch and apparently neglected it in favor of their keyboard business, which they frankly weren't doing real well at either. By the time a Gretsch (Fred) managed to regain control of the brand it was pretty much a dead brand. Fred Gretsch revitalized the company setting up their new base of operations in Savannah, GA. By 1989 Gretsch was back to producing good guitars and drums. Today they have a Custom Shop operation for USA made instruments but most mass production is in Asia.

The whole Gretsch thing is pretty remarkable. Imagine Leo Fender's family buying Fender back from CBS. Pretty much the same thing happened with Gretsch. That is really remarkable.

Fantastic job. Great looking and great sounding guitar. Something to be proud of.

I'm not usually a gold hardware fan but it really works here.
