I wonder where you live.
We recently discussed Fender prices around the world.
Where you live matters.
Used Fenders are often the way to go.

MIJ enthusiast here.
Don´t know about recent editions though.
My two Japanese Strats are from 1989.
They are superb.
Got them used for under $250 dollars.

To me, there is something about Fenders from decades past,
hard to say what that is.
I love the used Fender market.

Check it out man, this Japanese Strat is 24 years old,
got a great price on it, and plays beautiful.
Must have recorded some 50 jingle commercials with it.
Never let me down. 8)

I used to own 2 CS Fenders. Found an '82/'83 Squier JV (MIJ) locally and the rest is history. Only the electronics were lacking - easy fix.

One CS has since sold, one to go.

The scuttlebutt on the internet is that Fender USA doesn't want Fender Japan cutting into their sales, so they severely restrict the models Fender Japan can export.

I kinda figured it must be something like that.
So just out of curiosity, is there any way to order them online?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

The Jimmie Vaughan is/was the best deal ever on a Fender Stratocaster. All U.S. parts.. assembled in the Mexico factory. Thinking about it..that's pretty much the way it was done in the beginning. They just used two factories this time.

I understand Jimmie V tours with them completely stock.

I don't think you can order them directly. I was just looking at Jags on ebay and saw some CIJs listed. Another option I've seen discussed is to find a buyer in Japan to buy it and ship it to you, if you are willing to pay their fee.

As with any kind of instrument, device, or machine, there are cherries and there are lemons no matter where they're made.

I have an American-made Stratocaster, an hecho-en-Mexico Telecaster and two 1980's Fender acoustics (F250 and F270CE) that were made in Korea, and all of them are excellent instruments--regardless of where they were made.

...and the Tele is my go-to guitar for recording, jams and performing.

Don't get hung up on the origin of the instrument--play everything you can get your hands on, and choose the one within your budget that suits you best.

That's generally good advice, but the problem is that Fender Japan makes some beautiful not-for-export guitars that Fender USA and Fender Mexico don't. :( Here are a couple I keep drooling and GASing over. http://fendercolorchart.webatu.com/colors/GMB.php and

Not entirely accurate scuttlebutt. Japan made guitars are about 3 times more costly in US Dollars than 20 years ago. Back in the mid 80's there were way more available in the USA and they were a good value. Now there are less and they cost more, about the same as a USA made one. It is because of the US Dollar being weak against other currencies such as the Japanese Yen.

Also so far as quality goes, the Japanese electronics are subpar compared to the MIM. However the fit, finish and tonewood quality of the Japanese Fenders is excellent. I have owned USA, MIM and CIJ/MIJ. I know with a Japanese Fender I'm going to be replacing pickups, pots, caps, essentially the entire electronic package.

The discussion is primarily about build and quality, not colour scheme GAS.

I would agree with the comment about electronics. The Pickups in my '87 MIJ start sound weak compared to a MIM Tele I tried the other day. Can be hard to tell though - whether it's simply the strat smoothness coming through over the Tele's bite. The MIM seemed to have a higher output though.

For most of us, a guitar's finish is important too. And the subject of why Japanese Fenders seem to be rare in North America did, in fact, come up. The conversation followed a natural progression.

Out of all the origins mentioned, I do think the MIJ stuff is finished with the least attractive of sprays. (But)...They get their alder a little later due to being far away...so you never see obvious glue joint indentions in the finishes. They're above all with that. They also are cut and routed more precise than the rest.

I think the California plant has all aspects covered..and are the best all around.

Think about this mate. Do you think Fender waste money buying alder, get it shipped to Corona then disperse it to another plant for them to take their pick. Then send the remainder on to somewhere else?
Wouldn't it make more sense to just send the lumber to the individual plants from the lumber yard.

Who knows, the Japanese plant may actually be capable of buying their own raw material?

I think there is far too much supposition about the Japan plant and Fenders business practices. I can promise you this, FMIC share holders do not care where the guitars come from if they are making a profit.
