Two of the best Stratocasters for the money are the Jimmie Vaughan(Mexico), and the Squier Classic Vibe Stratocaster(China). Both have the prized Alnico pickups and alder bodies.

If you mean traditional when you mention "standard", both guitars I've listed are so.

What's your budget, first of all?

You'll get what you pay for but not a farthing more.

The Standard is Made in Mexico, the American Standard is made in the US.

'Better' is very subjective and down to what people's own ideas of cost/value are, and their budget. Personally, I think the Mexican the best balance of quality/value, and I have a Japanese Strat as my point of comparison. Even if I had the budget for a Custom Fender, I wouldn't pay it.

For a relatively new guitar player, the MIM Standard Strat will do just fine. With a few minor "upgrades", you will have one hell of a nice guitar.

What is your budget pal ? Either way , if you go with a MIM , MIA, or a Squier Classic Vibe, you're getting a great guitar .

Although I own both American and Mexican Strats, the MIM Strats have gotten better and better. I just bought a Roadhouse Strat(mim) and it has Texas special pups.I added the Fender Deluxe locking tuning machines and it stays in tune even with string bending and whammy bar dive bombs. If I were new to Strats,I'd go for the mim's and add accessories as I saw fit. You can always go American on the next one!

haha none of my Mexican guitars are on par with my MIJ one. MIJ is best value for money V quality, as long as importing one doesn't cost you loads of cash.

in fact I might move to Japan

I've often wondered why I never see very many MIJ/CIJ models for sale around here. Pretty much just MIA, MIM and some Indonesian and Korean lower end models. I also don't think I've ever encountered any Chinese models either.

The scuttlebutt on the internet is that Fender USA doesn't want Fender Japan cutting into their sales, so they severely restrict the models Fender Japan can export.
