For real. I came here to talk rock and roll and guitars and good stuff.

The great thing about a guitar is that when you pick it up you have a direct line into your emotions. And you don't have to talk about it.

You don't have to take part - plenty of R&R threads.

It's the emotional, rather than thought out responses that usually sees these topics getting out of hand. I find it encouraging this topic can even be discussed without mud being slung, and deletion. It's not taboo on a lot of other forums, but US ones just lock them all down, even before they degenerate.

If only people could be more civil about it, politics is an important topic to discuss, too many never do, and either don't bother to vote, or don't have a clue why they do. A better informed electorate can lead to better governments, instead of the media-reliant spin merchants - that aim for the gut and the irrational response - that we have all ended up with.

You clearly have no concept whatsoever of the rights that United States Citizens have enjoyed since 1789, nor the ramifications of such unwarranted coercive government intrusion into the right of privacy that most of us hold sacrosanct.

I must admit, that's pretty nostalgic. I guess if you were black, then you wouldn't have enjoyed the rights much back then, right up to 1965.

The notion of privacy is a paradox of US culture too. A culture that gave us Paparazzi, Jerry Springer, Oprah, and televised pop-therapy, where people are happy to lay out pretty much anything and everything to millions.

It is clear that you don't like or respect the US. Who cares? Your trolling here is getting monotonous. Why don't you worry about Australia?

I'm not trolling, a read of any of my posts on this should make that obvious. It's an interesting thread and hope it continues in the spirit it's gone so far.

If you haven't noticed, the more negative comments come from your own countrymen, who can separate opinions about nation, from government. I love Aus, but I've little to positive to say about either side of politics here.

You are obviously trying to incite a negative reaction. (If you'll notice, we hardly ever insult Australia.)

(It is best never to read these.ha) Laugh on. :D

It is my countrymen's country. Nation, government = same. Politics are the business of the citizens.

Ah, so I see you have judged an entire nation by looking at some of it's worst examples.

So, thank you for giving us Crocodile Dundee, big Fiberglas roadside attractions, and the Wiggles...don't forget to put another shrimp on the barbie for me.

I'm not patriotic; criticize the US government all you want...but I'm also not anti-anywhere...there's bad to be found with every culture, government and group of people.

But most of the time, you'll find a lot of good individuals everywhere, too.

Let's keep this civil, why don't we?

I thought it was. That's why I'm ignoring the previous poster. We gave you Fosters and Steve Irwin too (we couldn't stomach either), no, please, thank me later...

I've been to the US. I rode the buses in LA and walked the streets, never took a cab, I saw the everyday people, not just the service/tourist industry. I got lost plenty, great people everywhere. Terrible coffee everywhere too.

I'm not judging the nation by, or suggesting Springer is a benchmark, just pointing out a cultural paradox of the notions of privacy. Hard to see Springer, Oprah or Dr Phil getting off the ground anywhere else.

The rest of the world are practically force fed US culture, politics and events, that's why many outsiders have an opinion to offer. Much of it is informed from the same sources.

I have to agree with that statement- 80% of whats televised down here is from the US. Not much you can do to get away from it unless you subscribe to UKTV and the BBC.
Even in the UK- probably to a lesser extent however.

But all that aside here- getting off topic. If american people think that the privacy invasion is a new thing- its been happening since the 70's. Its even happening in our backyard at Echelon & CIA run spy bases like Pine Gap in the Northern Territory, and in the Northland of NZ. Which may be a reason why they have been able to get away with it since its all offshore operations. The only difference here is that its happening in the US homeland now.

Pine Gap, Northern Territory Australia:

Waihopai, Northland NZ:

One has to ask why the US want joint installations like these on foreign soils, especially in NZ- this aint no television station y'know! ;) The top photo, in Pine Gap- two of the satellite domes are primarily for international millitary missile surveilance use. The rest are for intercepting communications, among other uses.

In NZ, this base is used mainly for communications intercepting. This base played a major role in gathering intelligence from terrorist networks post 9/11. It is run jointly by the NZ GCSB, NZ SIS and the CIA which has staff stationed here. This facility played a major part also, of bringing down Kim Dotcom's website and a raid on his property led in conjunction with FBI. A major enquiry that even went straight to the Prime Minister (who is the minister of SIS and GCSB) as it was deemed that the level of spying was illegal, also the raids were illegal also. Because of this, Kim Dotcom has been succesful in fighting to get his possessions back from the Police and the FBI and compensated for what happened.

The irony of it, is that a controvertial bill was passed into government for legal spying of NZ citizens as a result- but this was kept quiet while other government matters took the limelight. The same level of spying that happened to Dotcom is the same that foreign
governments grant the relevant authorities to conduct. With other bases like this around the globe, this creates a global web that can intercept all types of communications from anywhere around the world. But as long as it is going to aid in bringing down cartels, gangs and smugglers etc to justice, then I am all for it.

But it's not designed to bring down drug cartels, terrorists and other real world threats. It's there to protect Hollywood and snoop on the internet activity of every day run of the mill larakins. If our governments were at all interested in the safety of their nations they'd forget this notion of "friendly" war (which is a media fairytale btw we've killed far more children and mothers than we have actual terrorists in the last 11 years) and just leave everywhere that opposed us as molten glass.
The CISPA act that got passed on the quiet in the house of representatives (though failed in senate) during the hysteria over the Boston bombing has been coupled in the UK with greater powers for MI6 to snoop on internet activity in the wake of the Woolwich murder. (MI6 tried to recruit that murderer a few months before hand incidentally. Shows how much of a threat we really view Islam as)
Seems the new world police have us on our knees and like all good whores.... we'll swallow it.

If you think you'll ever change that by voting, you could do with getting a job writing scripts for the sci-fi channel.

If it was, they wouldn't have signs designating it as a joint defence area.

Philosophically I absolutely agree with you. I think the fatal flaw is our inability in America to find any information that is without spin or political intent. The objectivity of data has died in this country. When all data is collected towards a particular political end there's really not much to trust.

Ultimately, if we can comfortably discuss our philosophies without a political slant, we've achieved the apotheosis of message board dialogue.

The fact of the matter is we won't.

Either way, being from Wisconsin, I can tell you confidently real political dialogue is dead.

I love guacamole, but only if there's no cilantro and the onions are chopped extremely fine. It's even better if they use lime juice instead of lemon.

This is the way the Armadillo 'Tween makes it.

No cilantro in the quac? Now a battle has begun. With cilantro the quac may as well be a chunky avocado based mess.

Anyone interested in my million person march for the objectification of cilantro?
