Right, I´m catching up!
Being obsessive, I´ve dedicated perhaps too many
hours to, of all things, Renaissance Music.
And so I´ve missed out I now see...

Eddie, Jeff, what to say? :D
Must revisit Rory Gallagher, from what I read.
Comparing Hendrix with Pagannini, well I´ll keep that in mind.
Was a huge Zappa fan for years, now not so much.
Vai, must give an earnest listen, go beyond that fan blowing his hair about.
God forgive me, not a Clapton fan. Like his singing better. Ouch! that will cost me perhaps...Edit button ready!

Unable to resist a second go, I put a word in for Andy Latimer.
What a great melodic player! Extended major-into-minor melodies that unfold beautifully.

I´ve this dvd. He opens with a Les for the classic Camel review, then brings out
a Strat for the remainder and really gets down to buisiness!

I guess Ceri is right, impossible to choose just one! But it´s great to read
just WHY these cats belong up there in your opinion.

I'm not one for technicallity, at all, I often think there's a balance of it and the soul, and quite a few players just totally forget the soul and just play, to me, what seems like an endless, boring, crap solo/lead part. I put a lot of thought into this, and I'd say there are two that stand out for me;

Kurt Cobain and Jack White. Two absolute masters at riff-writting, an they both have the same raw fericity on stage. They don't care if they yelled during a certain song in the studio, if they feel/felt like yelling live, they'll yell. Same with every other aspect of playing. A lot of musicians try to emulate what was on the studio version when it comes to playing live. That's not real. That's not in the moment. It takes courage to actually improvise during a song, totally un-planned on stage.
For me, Kurt's the single reason why I'm a guitar player, probably why I'm still here, why I'm into not only music, but art in general, and why I'm me. To make a person with a totally screwed hand pick up the guitar, and actually keep at it, I just had to put him down as one of the best players in my opinion.
Jack, is probably the only player that can give me the amount of energy and 'f*ck you, I'm gonna do what I want', feeling that he does through his simplistic riffs. His appreciation for real blues music is also just inspiring. I can totally relate to his view about making your guitar playing difficult, and that gives it life. Even before I stumbled across him, I was trying to make my amp sound as sh1t as possible, and my guitar absolutley wrecked. And it was and still is a struggle, to hit the next chord with my mis-shapen claw was a struggle

Johnny Winter. Johnny likes to make good guitar music and it shows in his playing, when he plays with others in a band environment and when he talks about music. Plus he is just an all around good Bro. 8)

Tell you what, I'll post one up with his hair pulled back for you. No fan to distract.

Billy Gibbons.
Everything he does is instantly recognizable, unique and fresh--whether it was recorded 40+ years ago, or last year. Out of 15 studio albums, only a handful of songs are "meh," and those particular songs, in another's hands, would be terrible.

Jimmie Vaughan.
He's unfairly overshadowed by his (admittedly great) little brother--his deceptively simple playing is as solid as the Gibralter. He's the best modern practictioner of the Excello/Gulf Blues style, and probably the biggest influence on my (non-slide) guitar playing.

Derek O'Brien.
Greatest blues guitarist you've never heard of. He was as big of an influence on the "Austin Sound" as anybody (Vaughan Brothers included). Great player, great producer, great band leader.

Bob Margolin.
Criminally ignored, his (live and studio) playing in Muddy Water's band during the Blue Sky years was as interesting and important as what the (amazing and awesome) Johnny Winter was doing on the other side of the room.

Been so many great influences especially through my younger years... Clapton, Beck, Page, SRV, and Gilmour to name a few... add in Townsend as much for his songwriting and style than his actual guitar skill. Today some of my influences come from very different genres, like Brad Paisley and Joe Satriani for example... what a combo that is.

But to who actually got me excited about learning and playing guitar, I think the longest most lasting influence is Eric Clapton because he's maybe the most rounded artist, and it goes way beyond just his solo-ing to the way he writes and puts so much feel into everything he does. He's done it for so many years and just keeps oozing guitar cool.

What about favorite performer? I'd start a thread on the subject..but I don't like posting pics.

I'd have to go with Adam Ant.

Tough one, but I think I have to go with Pete Townsend. I don't think there is another guitarist whose playing captures the spirit of what rock is all about better than him.
