I also forgot to mention Gary Clark Jr. I think that's his name. I saw a couple of his videos on You Tube and I just love his appreciation and dedication for the Blues.

Rory Gallagher, he was a nice guy who could tear a guitar up and make you have to go back to the woodshed, awesome slide technique and had one of those great guitar sounds you can't get out of your head. raw and unique nobody can touch him to this day. oh yeh, he's Irish.

From the first time I ever heard Steve Vai, he's been my favorite to this day. There's always a notion that guitar shredders like him lack emotion, and that all they do is scales up the wazoo. But Vai's approach of "phrasing" or speaking with a guitar as if it was telling a story has always been why I'm so fascinated by his guitar playing.

He has always just been himself. In an interview, he says " I don't focus on my weaknesses, I don't care about them, I focus on my strengths". Devoted and focused on being the best he can be, and who he is, for his own piece of mind. And if you get enjoyment out of what you hear, well that's all the better.

I'd have to say that his last album wasn't really my favorite of his. A lot of it is a little too whacky for me. But there's always that hint of something, even if its a brief moment on an album, that leaves me speechless. Something insanely amazing. That thing where you just say to yourself, "Did he actually just do that? If I practiced that for the next 10-years, I'd probably still not do it right."

I'm a competitive person by nature. I love a challenge. I love to challenge myself. That's why I think Steve Vai is my favorite. He will think of something impossible, and make it possible.

+1 TelePeter! I had no idea about M Ribot, then I bought a documentary dvd on his carreer...a blindfold buy.
A true artist, with guts, inspired me to be myself.
I watch that dvd often.
Think it´s called -la corde perdue- the missing string or silent string, or something
like that. Highly reccomend it, exploring the ethos and inner world of a
New York artist.

David Gilmour - he's the reason I started playing. Solos that tell a story rather than show off some licks. Incredible tone and care in what FX to use when, where and how much.

Alex Lifeson - such a versatile and under rated player from a band that's dismissed by so many. Unique chord voicings that are both powerful yet clear. Kind reminds me of Andy Summers in that respect. His solo dynamics are incredible. Check out the solo on La Villa Strangiato. The way it builds is amazing.

Trey Anastasio - I was dragged to a Phish concert not knowing who they were back in 1992. That guy just blew me away. Favorites include 'You Enjoy Myself', 'Ester', 'Divided Sky', 'Stash' ... Forget all that Grateful dead Blah blah blah stereotypes.

Three people are directly responsible for me becoming a guitarist. On Feb.9 1964 I was inspired by 2 Liverpool guitar players to become a musician-John and George had an enormous and profound effect on every aspect of my life. When I first heard Jimi Hendrix it all changed,it was like being struck by lightning. His music just reached out and grabbed me and struck a chord with me that told me this was the direction that I absolutely had to take and I sequestered myself in my music room for 8 hours and up every day for years.I strived to become as good as I possibly could on guitar and set very high standards for myself and worked diligently trying to decypher Jimi's strange chord chords and chord patterns and progressions.I didn't want to be a Jimi "clone" or what ever you'd call it but I set a personal goal to pick out as many of his songs and riffs and "sound effects" and technical tricks that he used.Sometimes I would spend hours trying to nail a tone or riff or just keep playing back a passage until I had a fair idea how he got that certain effect such as the "air raid siren" emulation that he did on the Fillmore New Year's Eve 1969 concert with "Machine Gun" after the "battle scene", I listened to that particular passage for an incredible number of times until I figured that he was doing hammer-ons with his left picking hand while fretting a note with his right hand. While he was doing the hammer-on he was bending the string as well as manipulating the vibrato arm with his left forearm, which added to the eerieness of the effect.

Jimi was the consummate showman and virtuoso and was certainly on par or even surpassing Nicolo Paganini for technical prowess and excellence. It is because of Jimi's unique and innovative playing style and the nature of his music and how it connects to me in an almost spiritual level that he is my favourite player.

Great player! One of my favourites as well.

My absolute favourite is Eric Bibb though. Unbelievable blues player! His playing truly speaks to me on an emotional level. His vocals are also spine tingling. I can listen to his music all day and never get bored, and there aren't many artists I can say that about.

Definitely agree about Vai. It annoys me when people write him off as a 'shredder', when a large amount of his work is absolutely dripping with 'feel' and contains some of the most expressive phrasing you'll find in any genre.

He's a genuinely nice bloke as well, and that always gets respect from me. A lot of players could learn a lot from him about the way they interact with fans.

I like Billy Gibbons. The reason is because I'm a rock music guy all the way,but I also love the blues. Rev. Willie plays blues based rock that I've been listening too and playing for decades. My favorite Strat player is a draw between Eric Clapton and Robin Trower.

I saw him live once, he blew the roof off the theatre. I've never seen a three piece band play with so much energy.

And another favourite player - Ritchie Blackmore. Love him or hate him, he wrote the rule book for virtuoso rock guitar.

Agreed, an excellent DVD that I myself own!
Been a fan of Ribot since his days with the Lounge Lizards and his session work with Tom Waits.
Cheers!

Hmmm... out of the 900 million guitar players out there, my all time #1 favorite player is:

Eric Clapton

Why? He was the first guitar player that made me pick up a guitar and learn how to play. I was just a little kid (11 yrs old or something) and I heard one of my older sisters play a Cream record on her record player way back then, and she turned it up. I heard the famous opening notes to "Sunshine Of Your Love", and ran to get my other older sister's nylon string acoustic. Somehow, someway, I learned by the grace of God, I must have been blessed with some sort of "gift" or "musical ear" or something... I played along with those famous notes on my sister's nylon string guitar, without knowing how to make a chord or anything. And to make matters worse - my older sister came in and caught me playing HER guitar, and took the guitar from me and then beat my a.$.$.!

GilgaFrank, +1, i never got to see Rory but his music is deffinately in my soul. as for Ritchie you are right every virtuoso must bow to him, too bad he's reduced to playing renisance festivals. i was saddened to see this; what a waste.

Just how did we get two pages into this thread without a mention for Stevie Ray Vaughan?

Brian Setzer.

He's brilliant on guitar, simple gear set up, and he rocks.
