...Would love to read why you like
your favorite player all that much!

One may be hard pressed to single out
one above several favorites, but I choose Bill Frisell.

I first heard him in his collaborations with John Zorn.
Far out, agressive experimental guitar, yet with such
fine taste and restraint...
And later I was just spell-bound by his melancholic, provencale taste.
Such a fine and subtle artist.
I have been happy to notice that in recent years he has
been using Fenders a whole lot. My favorite player and guitar!

Here´s a tune I love,

The best bass player I've ever seen was Michael Bishop(original Beefcake the Mighty) of GWAR. I'm not a GWAR fan..but he also had this great 3 piece band called Kepone in the 90's. They reunited a couple years back. You think Jaco had stamina? Not as much as Beefcake...

As for guitar and drums...I'll have to go with the Van Halen brothers. They create an atmosphere when they jam. Almost 50 years playing together will do that.

Richard Thompson. Sublime electric and acoustic tone and technique combined with songwriting that never falls into lazy cliché. His playing references blues, jazz, rock, country and English folk music, sometimes within the course of a single song. He's in a league of his own, the term genius falls short of the mark for Richard Thompson.

EDIT: or Jeff Beck. He's pretty good too.

Mine is Angus Young. Ever since I saw AC/DC on NBC's the Midnight Special way back in 1978, I was hooked. He is proof that you don't need a thousand effect boxes , etc to get a great tone. Just take yer guitar and plug it into that Marshall and let er' rip !

Can't possibly narrow it down to one. Fa-a-a-a-ar too many candidates.

I could name a couple of lifelong original influences, I guess. Two totally different players that are always there when I need them are Pete Townshend and Duane Allman. Nothing in common with each other, they both speak to something right in the middle of me.

Pete's writing and performance does a kind of simultaneous bipolar stomping-jubilation / angsty-self-doubt kinda thing which seemed to exactly express how I felt when I was a teenager and somehow still presses my buttons all these decades later.

And Duane - Duane at his best is just a glimpse of paradise.

There ya go - C

its difficult to pick out a favourite, but if somebody had magic powers and said to me "choose one guy who you could play like and ill make it happen instantly", it would be John Squires of the Stone Roses.

everything he plays just, to my ears, effortlessly flows, one lick to the next. he tended to just seem to play lead through out a whole song, though obviously repeating certain phrases and it worked perfectly with the music. everything just rolls along, perfectly timed and played to match whatever he just played or is about to play. sometimes the sound is lazy and rolling, sometimes its plastered in effects and sounds killer.

unfortunately there are very few videos of him playing, especially the stone roses second album which i prefer due to the increased emphasis on his playing. plenty of 'videos' of just the songs though. also his work with the Seahorses was similar.

Bill Frisell is an excellent choice, as are many, though I'll nominate Marc Ribot, as he's quite singular in his technique and style. His solos are almost always totally unpredictable and, as such, interesting and thrilling even after repeated listenings...

Seconded - Also because, in my opinion, he's one of the few 60's legends who has never stopped pushing himself for even a second.

At one time I was into Eddie and a few others who were fast and heavy.
Then I began to value taste and creativity and soul above athletic ability.
I will always esteem Gilmour but I think right now my fav guitarist is Warren Haynes. I keep coming back to him because everything he does is for the benefit of the music rather than for impressing people (or himself).

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Kurt Cobain. As discussed here and everywhere else ad nauseum, obviously not the greatest technical player of all time. But for me, he simply wrote more songs, riffs, and even solos, that--to this day--I simply want to listen to and don't get tired of, which get me going, full of energy, even though I've heard them hundreds of times, than anyone else.

I think the solo in "Rape Me" here (@ 2:59 of the vid) is simply greatness. Not Steve Vai greatness, but a different kind of greatness. I think it is *perfect* for the song and the moment:

That being said, almost all of my playing lately is done in a very clean tone Sam Beam style because of the noise requirements of my living situation. Sam Beam has written about 60 great songs using Am, C, G, and F or Em and a capo. lol.

Where to even begin explaining why? He almost single-handedly re-invented rock music, his playing was phenomenal, his music was mind blasting, his guitar tone was blistering, his stage performances were electrifying, and listening to him still trips my trigger to this day.

I just watched NIRVANA: Live at the Paramount. They sounded so good. No playing to a synchronized light show...no playing to a hidden click. There's an extra boost of energy when a good band does it like this.

Kurt was one of the top riff kings.

Agree. And BTW if you didn't already, that video is worth buying. The versions you find on youtube are usually speeded up to escape the copyright detection. The DVD has great sound quality if you have a good system to play it through.
