If any of you by chance have clicked on any of the spambot's links, it's best advised to download and run the free-trial version of Hitman Pro. It finds malware that most other progs don't. :!:

I'd like to think that people here are smart enough to not click on a spam link. :P

Agreed - but it's a really good program for any kind of malware detection.

Think you're not infected - heh heh - try it, it might surprise you.

Another good piece of advice - don't click links from untrusted sources and don't install anything that you don't trust 110%

And where else are you meant to go for porn and piracy? I thought those things were Fenders stock and trade these days.

Me too - hope you got this week's Mountain Lion updates installed.

Also, a good read:

So you don't upgrade that OS?

Works great I have no viruses. You don't *need* to upgrade to the latest OS. If anything an older OS is less likely to be targeted by malware.

An older OS is less likely to have addressed new threats which were not anticipated at the time it was released, and most manufacturers stop releasing updates and patches at some point after moving on to the next version of their OS. While you might not be the biggest target, you're actually more likely to have virus and malware problems.

Thanks for the heads up Miami Mike, I'll definitely check this one out. :D

Be very careful with anti malware products, as they can also be a scam. Only trust a very recognised product- because even free trial versions have very basic functionality.

A very common thing to happen is that even these products can look legitimate and trustworthy, yet they are malware that tricks you to scan your computer and presto- it downloads malware and trojans in the process. This is most downloaded by people who have basic knowledge in computers and are easily persuaded into thinking their computer needs a health check scan. Trust me, scammers and the like are VERY clever and not as stupid as most think, like all con artists- they will do anything to get your credit details... Just be careful what you download :?

Dont even click on a link attached to one of those threads. You can even get malware just purely by visiting a website!

I was told by a mutual aquantance, who is a very well known as a head of internet security at one of the major Telcos down here, that the only way to eliminate the risk of having an infected PC is to never go to dodgy sites, don't download pirated stuff and never open emails from people you don't know.

Then you may find that you wont get plagued by any spam emails

+2....Always, always research a product before downloading.

Another way to help isolate yourself from infection disasters is to use a separate (cheap) computer solely for email and web surfing. Transfer any downloaded, scanned and virus free files to another backup location on a regular basis in case you do get infected.
