I think they're beautiful instruments, and I'm really GASing for one. Something along the lines of

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... NA:US:1123

or maybe a vintage ES-135 if I could find one.

As for modern archtops, I've heard they're not that great (laminate tops) but theres been quite a lot of talk about the Godin 5th Avenue: http://www.thomann.de/gb/godin_5th_aven ... cburst.htm Absolutely gorgeous.

Any members out there own one?

I love'em. Maybe one day if the good lords willing and the creeks don't rise, I'll have a Gibson super 400.

There is nothing wrong with laminate tops, heck the 335 has been manufactuered with laminated tops since the get go.

My grandpa's old Gretsch Chet Atikins Tennessean. Went through WW2 with him and is in terrible condition...Doesn't sound half bad though!

A hand-carved-top-and-back jazzbox guitar tends to have character and life, in the same way as a hand-carved violin, viola or cello.

Highly recommended in a 'balanced' collection for a mature musician who plays a variety of genres.

They'll always be an archtop in my collection. It's a tone you just can't fake with a solidbody. Plus, I'm a huge Steve Howe fan.

How are they for playing slide? And how is the projection compared to a nromal flattop?

Personally, 'would not ever, ever, ever mess with setting up an archtop for slide (except a cheapie plywood box, in which case, 'do not know). There is at least one metal reso archtop out there, though.
