The other problem with CAPTCHA is that spam gangs actually go so far as to employ people (on incredibly low wages) to sit at home copy-pasting their spam messages and posting them on forums like this.

How about limiting posts to just one per minute? That should at least slow them down and all it takes is a few minutes with admin options.

There are 1,440 minutes in a day. And spambots can be very persistent.
