just a thought, either the forum software needs to be updated (if possible) or maybe a long standing respected memeber of the forum should be given the ability to delete threads/posts/users ?

no other responsibilities, no requirements to be on the forum for a certain amount of time. but if somebody the forum mods can trust is on here now and then throughout the day, and they have the ability to just delete posts and thread as and when they see them, and possibly users, it would probably make quite a difference. if its even possible.

Members deleting post doesn't really work that well IMO. Even long standing ones. I had it happen to me and a few others on a music forum years ago. My posts were deleted and censored not for language but for opinions that differed from the so called moderator. The site guitar brain eventually was spammed by porn and viruses probably from a ticked off ex member. Not me I'm not that computer savvy.

These spam robots are pretty tough and I guess it costs some decent money for the software to combat it.

this spammer logs in and checks the box "don't show online status this session" then lets his bot software spam the threads. You can see he is on line while looking at each individual post. tried to get him to respond for awhile with some nasty posts but deleted most of them because he just wouldn't respond. definitely a Former member with issues IMHO. my guess, from overseas. most of us here have some type of job or school, the spammer, no gainful anything I'm afraid, so, he"ll be back with a different log in and I'm not sure anything can be done except ignore and report. bummer

A couple of other professional photography forums I belong to won't accept email addresses from Gmail, Yahoo etc, they have to be from an internet provider or your own domain. Then they verify the address. It usually takes a day or so before you can even log in. I never see the spammers on them. It's way too easy to get on this forum.

This amounts to sabotage.
You have my vote for a long-standing member to have faculties.
Vote of full confidence to respected members.
Must look after each other in trust.

in retrospect it might not be a former overseas member but actually an IRS employee, after all most of them fit the description "not gainfully employed without any english language skills and mother and father of a different species, definitely not human"

I would imagine that employees of FMIC would oversee any appointed moderators to ensure that the forum is more free and open than this.

Spambots don't get ticked off, they just drift off and find another forum to infest.

Devlopment of bespoke software is expensive but phpBB is an open-source forum written mostly by volunteers. While this is good for the internet community, it does raise the problem that the source code can readily be examined for weaknesses by those looking to spread spam.

Interestingly, spambot operators don't actually expect anyone here to click on their links. The purpose of the exercise is to raise their search engine site ranking. When Google indexes a spammed forum and finds several links to the spammers' sites, the importance of the spammed site is raised in Google's index. Really it's a bot posting links in the hope that another bot will notice them. We're just piggy in the middle here.

There's many different reasons for spamming forums. That's one of them and could indeed be what's happening in this case, since the posted links all seem to lead to pages at "webs dot com" (I've written it like that for obvious reasons).

It might be satisfying to retaliate by bringing a spam storm down upon their heads in turn.

...Supposing, that is, that they are not an equally innocent third party victim of an entirely different kind of campaign.

Cheers - C

It's becoming clear that this forum can't continue as is and changes are needed to the way it operates as it is now damaging Fender's corporate image. Of the other forums I use, Bare Knuckle Pickups forum and DIY Audio both have a policy of "sandboxing" users' first few posts, delaying them until a moderator approves them for the site.

Neither forum has a spam problem now and no one complains about having to wait until their posts appear on the site.

Captcha on sign-up at any rate. That would stop the majority of 'em.

Ineffective. All you need to do is log your spambot in and let it start posting.
