sorry to get a little off topic there madhair,
i'll offer some advise as seen through the eyes of a person restoring an automobile ;)
as was said earlier, if you can find a used one for a decent price, that's good. just make surei doesn't have any major structural damage... i. e., bent, warped or twisted neck is a bad thing.
if it's possible to obtain the blueprint of the specific guitar, you can tool the instrument to within the tolerances specified to get it where it's supposed to be. you can actually wind up with an instrument that's better than it was when it left the assembly line.

let's face it. a guitar is a machine just like a car. if an engine is built according to blueprint, it will perform better than one that's mass-produced with greater tolerances. but it all has to start with a good base product.

Honestly Frankie, I just saw the title of this thread "Classic Fenders," and being a car guy before a musician, that was honestly the first thing that came to my mind, the front fender of a '63 Split Window Corvette, as many of those lines are used as inspiration for todays Vette. So, I did what any self-respecting car guy would do, and googled an image of said fender, and posted it.

I'm guessing my joke was missed by a lot of viewers of this thread.

No. The Vette isn't mine. I didn't have the money to get any nice cars through high school, although I did help friends and family work on theirs, then out of high school I enlisted, and I just recently got out of the Marines, so there went no cars for the past 6 years, but I'm looking for a project Camaro or possibly Chevelle at the moment.

Man I'd love a 68 Chevelle Malibu. Sweet ride.

well, a hearty and heart-felt salute to you and all who protect our liberty!!!
if you're serious about a project car, here are a few pointers:
1. check out some local cruise nights... you might find some "for sale" signs on some cars there, and there are usually some people who know some people.
2. ask your local mechanics if they know of any. I found my Mustang at a local garage. it was there for some brake work. I talked to the owner who sold it to me for $3200 (I negotiated her down from 4G's). I had it appraised at $10,000 in '05. I have to get it re-appraised now... i do it every so-often as more work gets done.
3. keep your eyes wide open... these cars are all over the place. if you see one, don't be bashful. bang on doors, get names off mailboxes, look up the numbers and make some calls.
in the past year, i've seen 3 chevelles and one camaro for sale within 2 miles from my house. they're out there. if you find one, LET ME KNOW!... there's some matters that need immediate attention... and there's even more fun to be had out there when you get started with the project... but that's another forum ;)

I've got someone to do the legwork for me.

One of my dads good friends has recently opened a shop for classic cars. He scours the southeast and sometimes out west for classic cars, buys them, fixes them up, and sells them.

He's the one looking for me a car. I told him kind of what I wanted, and he's looking as he looks for cars for his business. Of course, he'll get a nice finders fee out of me, and probably a lot of parts work and business that way too.

I'm a little busy doing footwork trying to get some investors for a guitar store I'm looking to open in a few months.

I saw what you said in the NAMM thread. Good luck with your guitar store. That's pretty cool. Let us know how it's coming along, okay?
