My amplifier sounds better when the volume is loud. But then it's too loud for me to listen to with the rest of the family, and it would be too loud for my ears if I used headphones.

Is there a way of simulating an amplifier that's got the loud volume, but actually play it at a quieter actual volume?

Thanks.

Try turning the guitar way down.

Although I think they kill the tone you might also try an attenuator.

Get a small 5W tube amp like the Epi Valve Jr.

Won't a distortion pedal do the trick?

Yes!

Some people (like me) don't like a lot of pedals. They would prefer to get their tone from the guitar and amp. I have in order, a volume pedal, a fuzz face, and a wah pedal.

The only reason I have the fuzz face in there is to get a distortion pedal in before the wah if I need it during a gig. I feel I get a better distortion if I distort pre-wah rather than post, as the amp is only breaking up the certain frequencies the wah lets through, and therefore doesn't get a full break-up tone.

Maybe he doesn't want to use a pedal, or can't find one that has the tone that he likes to get from his amp, in that case a power brake or some other power attenuator would have to suffice.

I'd rather rely on the amp too. The only pedal I really use much is a chorus.

If your amp is a higher powered amp such as a Fender Twin, Vibrolux, etc, you might want to look into THD Yellowjackets.

Ahhh - You must be somewhat new to the tube amplifier overdrive delimna. BUT - congratulations, because you have found the tone that most of us are after....that is the overdriven power section of an amp. The delimna is, it gets loud, as you yourself are experiencing.

There are numverous solutions such as lower powered amps, power attenuation, effectt pedals, etc. as folks have mentioned here. I recommend that you google a bit for more information and read up. It's a wonderful thing and you have scratched the surface.

Some amps have what is called a power squeezer on them
which cuts the volume down to a couple of watts but it
sounds like it does when turn up loud.

But no matter what you do, there's no substitute for saturated power tubes!
