Just a quick morning rant... something enjoyed a buffet in my garden last evening. Chomped all my strawberries (which were just getting ripe), and cleaned off the tops of nearly all of my tomatoes, cukes, zukes, and pumpkins.

Now, because I live in a quiet little left-wing town, the discharge of firearms (even BB guns) is prohibited... however, rest assured that I will be making use of my sling shot and 3/8" shot should I catch that little beast in my backyard again. I have a fenced in yard but I know the deer can clear the fence, and because they enjoy citizen status in town, are quite brazen and are not bothered by hanging out in close proximity to houses and whatnot. I didn't see any deer tracks so suspect it's a four-legged foe of a smaller persuasion.

Sounds like the work of a raccoon or a skunk to me.

I wondered about that, I did smell skunk in the yard this morning but I can never tell if it's a real skunk or a neighbor smoking or growing weed (it's Southern Oregon after all) If it's a skunk, I'm likely to give it a free pass... I really don't want to get sprayed. We had one spray work a few years ago and it made being inside the building a nightmare... it hung around for months. We do have raccoons around too but they've never gotten into my garden. I'll have to play it by ear... I hope they enjoyed the berries, the few I had picked and eaten were delicious. I wonder if the plants will come back? I know the vine veggies won't but I wonder about my tomatoes and strawberries.

I'd be shooting whatever it is with a pellet gun no matter what the town feels about it. You could try trapping it.

I've had a similar experience with a rodent helping himself to my vegetables in my garden. You might try spreading blood meal around the perimeter of the garden as it has been known to deter animals. It also adds nitrogen to the soil which is a bonus.

As a left winger in a right wing state I still support your use of a BB gun.

Oh don't get me wrong... I'm a lefty too but this town is like a circus without a tent, I grew up in New England thinking I was a hippy , then I moved here... it's a whole different world. I love it but love poking fun at it too.

I'm down with BB guns, believe me. If I had one I'd post up on the back deck.Funny story from town here... a few years ago there was a guy who shot a deer in his garden with a pellet gun and by some freak chance the deer died. He felt bad and didn't know what to do so he called the cops to tell them what happened. They cited him on a number of charges including discharging a firearm within city limits and he was in the paper and on the news. I'm just getting ready to graduate with my Masters and looking for a teaching job... I can't afford to be "that guy who killed the deer in his garden."

After closer inspection, I do believe it was a deer, not a raccoon or skunk.
