So, I've done my best to avoid sharing my age on these forums, but I guess it's about time that I do.
Next year I will finish up my high school education, and I would like to become a music producer and songwriter. My dilemma is that I don't know which school to attend.
Here are the three that I am considering (and the courses I am considering):
http://www.berkleemusic.com/school/cert ... d=21325342
http://www.apra.ca/
http://www.recordingconnection.ca/

The Berklee one is online, while the other two are in studio. I'm having trouble deciding which would be more beneficial, so I was just hoping for some opinions.
So, what do you guys think?

Thanks

Those websites all look good Nick, I'm not sure which one that I would choose. I wish you the very best and what ever your decision might be I think you will be successful and happy with it. Please keep us in the loop, we are in your corner!

Definitely go for one which get you into the studio and interacting with others in the field, even a little hands on experience is a million times more valuable than mere qualifications.

Hi FatNweak,

Being a Full Sail University graduate,
I highly reccomend you check it out.

The actual network of relations you can build
is probably the most important fact if you study production.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I would suggest that you consider a brick and mortar college, it would be much better for your learning experience because no matter how good the online courses may be-and Berklee has a really good name and reputation-they don't offer you the opportunity for any hands on experience and face to face discussions with experienced experts in all areas of your studies.

You're definitely going to want and need as much hands on experience as you can possibly get. If you live near a studio, try and get in as an assistant or intern while you study to learn and network in a “real world” environment. Do check out Full Sail. I graduated from there as well but do your homework in terms of expected salary versus student loan burden if you go down that road. At the very least, I’d lean towards an actual school as opposed to any sort of online course.

I've worked in several studios and one thing I can say is that with all the software and gear becoming more affordable, every Tom, Dick and Harry can now have a studio. That's a good thing but also affects the job market. I saw it happening so went into Post Production audio for Film and Television. That was great for a while but I got tired of the freelance thing. Another thing I noticed was a shortage of folks who could fix tech issues quickly when deadlines approached and an abundance of folks who wanted to edit and mix so saw an open market, especially in the video side of things so changed gears again. I’m very glad I did that. I’ve seen a lot of folks get laid off due to WGA strikes, budget cuts, and a shrinking world of facilities but I was fortunate that the support engineers often were untouched.

The point to my long winded response is whatever you choose, network as much as possible, and get as much hands on as you can. And keep your eyes peeled for opportunities in the market.

Best of luck to you, keep us posted.

You've already got some good advice from people who obviously know what they're talking about.

As to your age, one thing I've learned, age isn't always a sign of maturity, you've conducted yourself well and have earned some respect here.

Good luck with your life choices. The commitment you'll be making will only be a small part of your life that will make your life what you want it to be. Hang in there.

Congratulations, dude! Seriously. No matter which you choose, you will be fine. You have already won the battle by being aware of this type of career option at your age. Good on you. No matter what, do not change your mind and go to law school or study accounting or anything like that. Stick to your dream no matter what.

When I was your age I thought I had two career options: accounting or law. Yes, I will go ahead and blame my dad for that. Music was just not a part of my house growing up.

And yeah all the advice about networking is good. In any industry it is always about "who you know."

Some of the best producers never went to music schools. Many did get degrees from other colleges though.

For now, follow Sound on Sound, which is excellent producer type info - the magazine is better than the online version.

If you use iTunes, there are some very good podcasts from name producers that you may find interesting.

Thanks everyone!

At this point I'm thinking that I would take songwriting online from Berklee, and then go to Recording Connection and get a masters in music production.
Recording Connection is basically an apprenticeship, where you spend a lot of time in a real recording studio, with real artists. I would be working one on one with an instructor (who is a real music producer).

Also, WOW! Full Sail University looks amazing! I'm thinking that it would be more money than I am willing to spend though. Then again, I'm not completely eliminating it quite yet. I have a friend who is considering going there for video game design, so it would be cool to attend the same school.

I spent two years taking classes at a school similar to the Recording Connection, to learn to be an engineer. This was in '77 / '78 when the transition from analog to digital was just taking place.
I would advise you to take a balanced approach. Hands on experience, in the studio, while real sessions are happening, meeting people and building contacts is probably the most important aspect.
However, some of the info you need to really be good, like accoustics, microphone design, outboard gear, should be laid out in a classroom enviroment. A mentor can tell you which mic will work best for a snare and which works best for an accoustic guitar. But to really understand why, you need to see some graphs and specs. With that kind of info you can start to work outside the box and do things a little different. Pretty much every successfull band wants their sound to be different.

I was enrolled in this program in the late 90's but unfortunately I never finished.

I would have taken the recording arts in 2nd year.
