I was just on another guitar forum where there was a post about the smells of guitar playing.

And it got me thinking--I am confident I could identify each of my guitars by smell alone.

So for those of you with two or more guitars or basses-
If you were blindfolded and not allowed to touch the instrument, if each was placed where you could smell it--could you identify each guitar correctly?

With woods, finishes, age, etc each of mine has its own smell that I notice when I play them.
Therefore I am confident I could do it.

Now I want to go try it--who wants to come over & place my guitars under my nose?

That's an odd question. I'd have to say no.

However I do know that I can identify them by sound, even unplugged. We did some science here, I scored 100%. You can't argue with science.

Probably not. I could get one probably, but only because it is a cigar box.

Ha ha, my American flag P-bass smells like hot dogs (Chicago style) and french fries, but I bought it from my Bros pawn shop so it was the original owners habit

I would be able to identify my Gibson Les Paul and Gibson Acoustic, they put something in the cases at Gibson that make them smell like vanilla cookies! I think I could also get my Michael Kelly and Peavey T-60 by the smells of the cases, and my MIM Strat from the smell of the case too. The others just don't smell like anything.

my Seagull 12 string acoustic has a distinct smell, i think its to do with the lack of any sort of finish on the wood. also my '85 MIJ 62 custom tele RI has an obvious smell, which i think its picked up from the case its been in since new. smells nice though

i doubt i could identify any of my others though.

wow o.o i think i could... my mim smells kinda like weed since my first gig (sound guys fault) must be some powerful stuff cause the smells been there since 2010, my vm strat can't really tell yet cause i never noticed but it does have a decent smell i just can't really describe it cause i never thought about it, my classical guitar still smells like the day i got it, perfumed lumber and the more suprising one is my new modern player marauder o.o the smell reminds me of white chocolate since it came from the factory...

how do you do it fender???? is it weird that i actually know this?

Strangely I can. For example, my 2011 Gibson ES-335 smells like vanilla right out of the case. :)

Most new Gibsons smell like this.

This reminds me of the old saying, "Once you get past the smell, you've got it licked!"

This, I have to say, is something that I have never thought about. I would have to say - the cases, maybe - the guitars (other than the 2 or 3 I gigged with back in my smoky bar days), doubtful.

Oddly, I haven't the slightest interest in finding out... :|

But if someone wants to come over and open these cases for me...
