Borrowed a squire strat from a friend and as I tried to loosen the whammy bar I noticed it was extremely stiff so I started working it back and forth then it snapped. Part of it is still inside. My question is, is it possible to loosen the strings and bridge enough so I can drill out the remaining piece inside, tap new threads, buy a new whammy bar and retighten everything and play. I would really like to hear that its not a professional job or that I need a whole new bridge as well as bar. Please please help me out.

Yes, it can be done.
1. Whammy's are relatively cheap and easy to find at any guitar store.
2. Usually, guitar players leave them kinda loose so they swing freely.

try getting a drill, and instead of a bit, get a nail that fits loosely in the hole. You can usually see the hole where the whammy screws into from the back-side of the guitar. Put the nail into the hole and drill slowly applying light pressure against the bottom of the "nub". if the bar wasn't too tight to begin with, it should start to work itself out thru the top of the bridge. You should be able to grab the tip with a pair of pliers and screw it out.

MOST IMPORTANT:
Most Fenders and Squier guitars are shipped with the bridge locked. it's either 2 or 6 screws that the bridge pivots on. A locked bridge has these screws tightened down so that the bridge doesn't move. Click the "Support" link on top of the screen and you can find the Stratocaster Setup guide. It'll give you step-by-step instructions on how to set the bridge up for the tremolo.

Good luck!

Hey thank you so much frankie I've done a huge amount of research and talked to my local shop and they said its a relatively easy process for a handy man. I'm a mechanic by day and have all the proper tools to drill it out and retap the threads for the bar. Its gonna be a hell of an experience but I should be able to have it all set. Much appreciation for the advice.

Or if some of the bar is poking out the top of the trem, cut a slot into it with a hacksaw and unscrew it using a flat headed screwdriver

I would just get a new block. The guitar will benefit from a new block for sure
