hey guys it's been a while :) a lots been going on.. i started a new band called "vital infamous" it's alright but not the greatest band i've been in... it'll do.. i've also been giving lessons and i've been looking into a good starter electric for the kids... i'm obviously into the SE strats cause they are really well built and the perfect modding platform if the kids want to go that route in the future... they have that fender strat feel cause they are full bodied and the neck is alright for beginners...

though i've been noticing that fender has been changing up the affinity series and i'm loving the finishes that are coming from there though the reduced body, and the pickups from the older models have been major turnoffs (though the pickups aren't really an issue)... has anyone ever come across the newer affinity strats??? do you guys know if they are back to becoming full bodied strats?

Honestly, for the money as long as it stays in tune and has a proper setup I'd be happy with one.

You start getting a much more quality instrument at the CV line, but if you understand what you're getting for 200 bucks then an affinity is a good investment for any beginner.

The current lot that I have seen have a very skinny fretboard. That is very small distance from E to E. OK for very young kids but bigger hands will suffer. Also they have the CBS style headstock. Which for me is personally a deal killer.

Interesting comment. My vid was more of an experiment with the effects pedals, but when I play "normal", I found it to be very nice, not too narrow of a fretboard, actually, very nice indeed. And the larger size headstock is OK by me. I have found that with more "mass" at the head, the guitar itself sustains better than the $500.00 MIM's that I've owned. I was really surprised how nice this guitar "plays". Maybe I just got a "good" one as we know you got to play a bunch before you find a "keeper". Your results may vary :)

The Affinity Strat is designed for smaller hands ie... children. The neck at the nut is is 40.8mm 1.5" whereas the neck on an American standard is 42.8mm 1.58". for larger hands even the neck on an American Standard is tight. The standard width at the nut for Gibson and many other manufacturers is 1 11/16" It doesn't sound like a lot but when you factor in the profile of the neck and the nut width that little bit came make a huge difference. I have small fat hands and the 25.5 scale on an American Fender can make the reach challenging, but the neck profile and width are very comfortable.

The new Affinity Strats are playable but the electronics and hardware are weak. As suggested earlier the Classic Vibe series while a tad more expensive is worth the extra 100 dollars. They fill that price point between the Affinity series and the MIM Standards.

Here's a photo of my new Affinity Butterscotch Telecaster which I did some slight mods to. It's a January 2013 model according to the serial number on the back of the headstock. I just bought it a couple of weeks ago at Guitar Center . I put some Copper shielding tape in the pickup and control cavities and then installed a Vintage style topload 3 Barrel Saddle bridge. That makes restringing it much easier and it sounds much better as well . I don't see any reason to swap out the stock pups. IMO, they sound great.

Glad I read this post about the strings being so close together. I'm in the market and was thinking about a Squier. Crossing that off the list now. What budget guitar has the widest string spacing?
