I decided to grab my old piece of junk Samick 4 string bass, that a buddy and I bought in a pawn shop about 10 years ago. It had the most God awful disco-themed type of bright orange metalflake finish. We stripped it all down, rewired it, and tried to fix the warped neck with a matchbook cover/shim and bolted it all back together. Hey, it works... What the the heck...

Any of you guitar players also play bass, or play a little of everything? What do you think for $75 bucks from a pawn shop?

There are worse instruments out there. Samick is a decent entry level brand. It is worth $75. You may not have gotten a steal, but it is workable as a player. The hardware and electronics on them are the weak points. I think I would have adjusted the truss rod some, you didn't mention doing that. It could be the truss rod is maxed out, but I would have tried that.

Sorry... Yeah, I forgot to mention that. That old buddy of mine and I tried to adjust the truss rod and it is maxed out. The whole neck was bowed no matter what, so we jury-rigged it with a matchbook cover under the neck and shimmed it that way. Hey, it worked, you know?

The same people that own Samick own many other brands. It's my understanding that they save the best of those companies for the Samick brand..so whether that's true or not...there are some suprises out there. I had a fretless Samick 4 string that was killer.

Anyway...sounds like a P bass to me.

Samick makes a really good piano too. Actually Samick owns nearly 1/3rd of Steinway now.

Samick made guitars in South Korea for Epiphone, Squier, Washburn, Hohner and other entry level brands. They also now have a facility in Indonesia like most entry level makers.
