Very cool. You’re braver than me. I turned down the opportunity to take my high school chum’s challenge to go to subs. He kept getting lost and my destroyers would go looking for him and Ivan. He spent so much time in Pearl that he had a permanent Hawaiian girlfriend. I didn’t. Maybe, if we’d had one as big as the Alaska I might have been at the luau.

Cheers!

I’d just like to take this moment to add that, although there is discussion of those who served and haven’t left us as a result of it, no insensitivity is implied.

Some years ago, Lightnin MN brought up how politicians concern themselves with Veterans’ events like Memorial Day and, like in countries everywhere, these public servants are sometimes on a different planet. When it comes to those in the military they have a kinship, they are a family that cannot be separated and, for many, it stays with them for life. No need to explain. It just is (or isn’t).

My father who volunteered at the age of 17 (the same age as when I volunteered) was in a full page of a 40s Life magazine standing in the foreground of an honour guard for a burial at sea after battle. He had nightmares throughout his life, probably because of his corvette’s brutal surface battle with a U-Boat where his buddies were lost, and, except for those captured sailors locked up in a cafeteria, the enemy’s dead were retrieved or unceremoniously without choice scuttled accordingly.

I often think of those young American kids who entertained me just days or the night before they shipped out to ‘Nam, and more. Since then I meet our own servicemen who face today’s dangers around the world. Did they make it back? Will they make it back? I don’t know; but, I think of the men and women who are still serving and I hope they will all return to have discussions like this, and a life they deserve. To the others who weren’t or aren’t so fortunate. I give my thanks, respect, and memories. I’d like to tell them or show them this in person; but, unfortunately a symbolic gesture will be the best one can do. At least it is something.

My wish for those who have left us is “Rest In Peace”, and for those who are with us “Live In Peace”. I believe our lost Vets would want it this way.

Side note: In ‘67 I spent the night with some of the crew of the Nautilus while in Norfolk. My ship the HMCS Crescent (a refitted WWII Fleet Class destroyer, RCN’s fastest which proved handy) had a framed Norfolk paper article from a friendly bet that we could locate the Nautilus in a specific time period. It was unfair to the sub’s crew because the Captains had made the bet before the Crescent returned to Halifax to install a newly designed VDS cable sonar which was unlike any other. We won (before I boarded her) and laughed about it with the Nautilus’ crew some time later. While I remember the good times about that, I also take this moment to remember the sacrifices of the crew and civilians of USS Thresher SSN-593. Talk was still fresh in the minds and hearts when I was in Norfolk (4 years after the tragedy), and the memory still is today.

Thanks for all the nice words. Sincerely. And, like all of you, it seems to not be lost on any of us here that Memorial Day is about those individuals "who gave all". While admittedly extremely difficult, my military service was a breeze compared to what they were subjected to. And I think I am safe in saying that we all deeply appreciate their sacrifice.

Nautilus and Thresher!! Wow!! I lived through all of that. Watched the building and launch of Rickover's dream. Even built a model of the Nautilus. Did you rub the nose of Rickover's statue when you went in for finals? Interesting side story: I made the acquaintance of someone who had been in the service way back when the 'under the pole' missions were being conducted. He still refuses to talk about anything related to that time. Claims the details are still classified.

You are indeed safe in saying that, 01GT eibach. We don’t choose our fate,; but, you have, if I may, our thanks for keeping us safe as well.

That must have been an interesting conversation about the polar trip, Doc. :D
My father spoiled me with models and books from overseas. In the 50s he would ship out on a Canadian British built cruiser for as long as 6 months, and I got to be a quasi-historian with wooden and plastic models with ships of old and new (mostly American and British). What a treat to see a lot of them in person when I reached manhood.

I believe he said he served in the 'Los Angeles'. It was a very short conversation for the reasons I gave. An the bio below certainly doesn't tell it all. It wouldn't.
