I know that a lot of stomp boxes that are on the market leave much to be desired in the durability area but I have bought several in the past 2-3 years that are extremely durable to the point of being practically bullet proof. In the past few months I have bought a Way Huge Green Rhino overdrive that`s not only incredibley robust but is one of the best sounding overdrives that I`ve ever used-it`s right up there and possibly surpasses Timmy`s in tone and performance.I also bought a Vox Handwired V-847 wah wah pedal that is just incredible in its expertly executed point to point soldering but the whole pedal just screams rugged quality, plus it`s the closest thing that I have heard yet that comes anywhere near the tone of my `67 Vox Clyde McCoy Signature wah.I have a Tech 21 RotoChoir Leslie simulator that is housed in a very high quality steel casing which in turn comes in its own steel box whereas almost all others come either in a cardboard box. The Danelectro Cool Cat pedals aren`t only tough but they out sound and out perform just about everything in their price range ( $45-$65) and even outclass pedals costing over twice the price I have their Cool Cat Chorus-which has a real almost Leslie like warble, the Cool Cat Tremolo-which can give you really slow trem speed or a superfast stuttering speed and intensity from very subtle to almost The Smith`s " How Soon Is Now?" intense throbbing,I bought their Cool Cat Transparent Overdrive 2 whic can give you everything from a crystal clear but very loud clean boost or a really snarling beastly boost. The Cool Cat Vibe rounds off my Danelectro pedals and that has a definite UniVibe vibe when you take the time to twiddle with the settings and what really sounds incredible is to put the Vibe on a long, slow fairly intense speed and the chorus on a faster speed but now quite as intense setting-the effect is very cool and addictive. All of these pedals are still on the market, the Green Rhino costs about $120 on sale and the RotoChoir costs about $225 and the Handwired Vox wah will set you back about $200 if bought at the regular price but each pedal is worth the extra cash layout.

My Boss SD-1 is cool, but there's a heck of a lot of difference between it and my Mojo Hand FX Rook Overdrive (which cost $100 more). I didn't think there was that big of a difference between mass market and boutique pedals either until I tried the Rook.

As for build quality, I think all of my pedals (Boss, Mojo Hand, homemade and more expensive MXR) are pretty solid. The one exception being my first pedal, a Dan Electro Overdrive. It's plastic and feels really cheap. But I wasn't around back in the day, so I wouldn't really know how they compare to the way things used to be.

By the way, Fulltone does make some good stuff. I have a friend with an OCD and I think it sounds great.

The flood of products in pedals in the last few years is sort of astounding.

I've not seen any of the new MXR stuff but back in the day, there was only a few "players" (MXR, Boss, DOD to name a few) they all made rugged roadworthy products, the pedals that always seemed to be a bit cheaply made to me were the Zoom Pedals, but they do seem reliable. My brother in-law is still using the Phase 100 I "Loaned" him in 1980... it's noisy but it's older than my oldest kid, (35) still works.

These days, don't have many pedals I use, 5 to be exact... Of which I have a few Line 6 pedals, MM4, DL4, that I picked up well over 10 years ago, they've been mounted on a Pedal Train pedal board, but they have had lots of road use, they have never failed on me. you could probably toss these thru a car windshield and they would still work. (not that I've tried it)...Also have a L6 Echo Park, and it's as rugged.

Radial pedals are also tank like, and sound great. I have a few Visual Sound pedals (compressor, and a chorus delay that I really don't use..) but well made for sure.

The old ProCo Rat was built like a tank and survived many years of abuse on the road. Times change, preferences and sounds change.

I don´t have much experience with pedals, coming from a classical guitar background.

If cheaper and less durable sells well, that´s one thing.
If there is discontent all around with the current batch of light weight stomp boxes, I would guess it won´t be long for a return to the sturdy ones of old, because it sounds to me like they do quite a bit of market research to keep them selling. Now that there is a precedent, one would suspect them to come back at a higher price.

For my part, it is the kind of product where -Made in the USA- is what I would look for.

+1 sir

You really owe it to yourself to try a Japanese version some day. I'll quit hinting at it, but I really do feel strongly about it in this case.

+2.

Not everyone loves the sound of Boss pedals, but it's hard to argue that they're not durable. I've a few now that have lasted me several years of regular use.
