T2Stratman, glad to hear you are okay and I am proud of my fellow Okies.

Everyone on this forum can also be proud of their fellow musicians here in Oklahoma. There has been numerous local jam benefits held and still more to come. Alot of bands have pledged their tips for the next month to go towards helping the tornado victims.

A couple of lessons to be learned;
Most of the fatalities and injuries in Friday's OKC tornadoes were people in thier cars. After seeing the devestaing destruction in Moore and Shawnee from the week before people were trying to get away from the tornadoes path.
Last Friday's tornadoes were much smaller and in most cases if you haven't a storm shelter to go to, taking cover in an interior part of your house away from windows is still the best thing to do. The local TV and radio weather reporters do a pretty good job letting you know what's headed your way.

Also, if you think it would be fun to be a tornado chaser.....well think again. In 2 seperate incidents three veteran tornado chasers were killed and another three were injured in last Friday's tornadoes.

I can totally understand the guys who go out to chase tornadoes for scientific purposes, but I just don't get the people who do it for fun or just to take videos. If it has scientific merit and you're doing research to help save other people's lives, that's what's worth risking your own life over. But other than that, it's just like if we had a bunch of recreational firefighters or policemen with little to no training responding to emergencies. Anyway, just my opinion.

I've recently heard from a friend who's lived in OK for 60 years and he said when he crawled out of his "fraidy hole" (bunker) the sights that he saw were some of the worst.

Glad your friend is ok. Hopefully his home didn't have much damage.
More storms coming Tuesday and Wednesday, but fortunately the tornado chances are low. Flooding is more of a danger now. Some places had as much as 13" of rain Friday night. We had 7" here where I live.
For those of you who don't know...."fraidy hole" is common slang for a storm shelter. :) People in Tornado Alley do have a sense of humor.

Just minor damage he said and very lucky.

Thanks for describing the term "fraidy hole" - sometimes I take too much for granted.

Well go ahead and have a mental picture of me diving into a "fraidy hole" if (when???) we have another one of these;

Tue, 04 Jun 2013 14:34:55 -0400
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — The deadly tornado that struck near Oklahoma City late last week had a record-breaking width of 2.6 miles and was the second top-of-the-scale EF5 twister to hit the area in less than two weeks, the National Weather Service reported Tuesday.

The weather service initially rated the Friday tornado that hit El Reno as an EF3. But the agency upgraded the ranking after surveying damage from the twister, which along with subsequent flooding killed 18 people. The weather service determined that the storm packed winds reaching 295 mph.

The update means the Oklahoma City area has seen two of the extremely rare EF5 tornadoes in only 11 days. The other hit Moore, a city about 25 miles away from El Reno, on May 20, killing 24 people and causing widespread damage.

But Friday's massive tornado avoided the highly populated areas near and around Oklahoma City, and forecasters said that likely saved lives. When the winds were at their most powerful, no structures were nearby, said Rick Smith, chief warning coordination meteorologist for the weather service's office in Norman.

"Any house would have been completely swept clean on the foundation. That's just my speculation," Smith said. "We're looking at extremes ... in the rare EF5 category. This in the super rare category because we don't deal with things like this often."

The EF5 storm that hit Moore decimated neighborhoods. In Friday's storm, many of the deaths were caused by heavy flash flooding following the storms. Three storm chasers died in that storm.

Smith said the storm's 2.6-mile path — besting a record set in 2004 in Hallam, Neb. — would have made the storm hard to recognize up close.

"A two and a half mile wide tornado would not look like a tornado to a lot of people," Smith said.

A tornado is nothing to trifle with.

Dive at your discretion "if/when"......there's nothing to be embarrassed about.

oxfan and I were just joking around a little bit, but you're right Arjay.

Talking with family and friends, who like me have lived their entire lifes in Oklahoma, we all are feeling a little skiddish now days. We have always been aware of what a tornado can do and even though we joke about it we have always taken them seriously.
But somethings different. While respecting tornadoes we never have really felt fear, unless we were in the direct path of one. Anymore it seems like I pay closer attention when severe weather is possible and my friends do too. It's like we always knew chances are we won't even see one, much less be in one's path. Now we feel it could happen at anytime and could also be a very large one, EF 4 or EF 5. Whether that is a real fear or not doesn't make much difference.....we all feel that way.

I guess this year's tornadoes have at least mentally effected everyone across the state.
