There's an abnormally large number of Spam posts on the Forun today.I thought that the mods had installed software etc. to cut down on the amount of that useless drivel that gets through.Anyway I make a mental note of the companies that send this garbage and make it a point to never do business with them.I would be very wary about doing business with an outfit that is so void of ethics that it would go on a forum sponsored by another unrelated company just to use them for free advertising.Such a company is obviously run by someone with no scruples and who most likely would have no qualms about ripping people off.

One guess might be all the "bots" we have roaming around here and reporting back that there is a large group of people coming here every day. That could be the reason we get spam in the first place. Then the demographics of our users could possibly one of the keys to what kinds of spam we get, based on where people like to go and what they typically look for.

That's speculation on my part but I think the notion may have some merit.

Russia, judging by the Cyrillic alphabet.

Other forums have an approved first posts policy whereby the first few posts from a newly registered user have to be approved by a moderator before they appear on the site.

And I don't care what anyone says, I know for damn certain that the phpBB software is capable of word filtering and specific words can be added to the filter list.

http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=29226

There is no reason this can't be used to block words and phrases like "watch online" and "episode".

Don't believe me? Try posting words like f*****g s**t c**t and see what happens.

#$@*&!% $@!& $@!&

If those words can be filtered then so can things like spam URLs and "watch online" posts.

EDIT: here's a post from 2008 discussing module development of the already installed word filter.

https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... 15&start=0

EDIT2: 5 minutes with google finds a free, open-source phpBB module to block unwanted posts

We need Mack Bolan aggressively patrolling the internet to rid it of all the mindless cheese-dicks......

The .44 Automag is an excellent implement for dispatching obnoxious spammers.

Usually they just promote torrent download sites... Perhaps they are looking at some of our browsing history like Google & Facebook..? They wouldn't promote porn for nothing!

Another non music forum I am on, is getting inundated with spam posts averaging 7 every morning
The owner had blocked indonesia and china so far and they are still getting through
they are for a firm supplying kitchens and have apparently been doing it for years
Problem is, to get them banned , apparently he had to jump through hoops just to get ONE address banned and they change the addresses every day , using hundreds per month

It is a sad reflection of the modern age that they seem to have the law on their side

Me, I'd string 'em up by the gonads

There was an allegation that some websites used some tricky client-side script to check the colour of hidden links to see if they were in your browser history, I've never heard anything similar about Facebook. The trick was to unseen links on the page to popular sites then check if the computed colour was the colour of a "visited" link.

The truth about tracking is you are being tracked - mostly by Google - on a startling number of sites. Any site that uses Google Analytics, Google jquery, Google Captcha or any other service hosted by Google can personally identify you by checking the HTTP_REFERER header or setting a browser cookie. And that includes Youtube and any site that has embedded Youtube content. And if there's a Facebook "like" button then Facebook know where you've been browsing. Note that you don't even need to click these, simply viewing a page with a third party's embedded content means you can be tracked.

I'm a web developer by profession and I've written a number of applications that use the MaxMind GeoIP database. It's free, reasonably accurate and lets me block entire countries from registering and posting. A company like Fender with a global reach may find this approach distasteful though.

Absolutely 100% true, in fact it's almost getting like that scene in "The Minority Report" (if you happened to see that excellent movie) where Tom Cruise's character is walking around and all the billboards are calling out his name to get his attention, even asking him about how his past purchases 'worked out'. It's all pretty creepy really.

I enjoyed Minority Report, apart from the one stupid scene where he drops the eyeballs he's carrying and they bounce like superballs. That was so utterly stupid and unbelievable I lost the ability willingly to suspend disbelief for the rest of the film. Sorry Mr Spielberg, ya blew it right there.

And Samantha Morton with a shaved head looked surprisingly hot. More people should be bald, it's sexy.

... sorry, what was this thread about again?

I admit that rolling eye balls thing was the point in the movie that woke me up to reality as well.

Speaking of bald babes being sexy ... remember Persis Khambatta? She was the East Indian woman who played the bald chick on the original Star Trek movie, the one about V-GER. Mmmmmm ....

OK, er, umm ....
S'cuse me, I'll be right back.

Ya know, Brad has assured us several times that he and his team are working on various protection methods for the forum to block spammers and certain known trolls. Keep in mind that Brad is responsible for IT for ALL of Fender and that this forum is probably not the highest priority for him. Maybe we should just let him do his job. He knows we have a spam problem (though not as bad as some places) and he doesn't need us to remind him of it.

Oh, he has also asked us over and over to not respond to spam posts and just report them, but there are still plenty of people who find it necessary to respond to them and tell everyone else that the post is spam.

Maybe we should listen to him as much as he listens to us.
