Hello

I'm a Big Big Fan of Fender and Blues Music.
I Really like Fender. I got a Few Fender Amps and 4 amazing Fender Guitars and 1 Squier.
I Live In Belgium, Europe.

But when Fender do a contest to win amazing prize from them , ( Clapton signatures gears , .. )
I am so disappointed not to participate in these awesome contests because my area is not allowed to participate .

Does someone can tell me why Belgium seems to be always forgotten for these contest ?
Or If We are under an particular area, it seems i can't participate to the French or german contests too ..

Thx
Mr.Blues

I don't know for this contest , but most of the time it is same in Quebec , Canada than your country .
Some laws in Quebec ask a contest must follow some rules that fender or other don't want to .

I hear you Blues. Same here in the UK when i wanted to enter a contest and couldn't.

Think it's because they don't want to pay the P&P outwith the USA if it's a big item like a guitar or amp. :x

Protesting to your own government is more appropriate than bitching on this forum. FMIC has absolutely no control over how contest and sweepstakes rules are administered internationally.

Considering how much product Fender ship to Europe, do you really believe they are struggling to meet the postage costs?

The reason most contests aren't open internationally is because YOU have to PAY the IMPORT TAXES, no one else. As recipient you are liable for import taxes, VAT and customs charges.

How do I know? Because I won an acoustic guitar then 2 months later got hit with a big bill.

I'm sure this will go to the top of government agendas everywhere.

You know, this is just a wild stab, but you know, with Fender like, being a WORLDWIDE corporation, often based in, and handling the importation and distribution of their products in many different countries, they could really, really easily make competitions more inclusive, and let the local arm hand out prizes.

But I guess that really is 'too hard'.

I guess you're alluding to my other posts. The fact they aim to exploit buyers here? My issue? Their prices suck. That's their issue. They're losing margins because people are buying elsewhere, or other brands. That's their issue.

Live outside the US, and many more would be doing the same.

They run an international forum and promote comps on it that only US residents can enter. I don't care much about that, I'm not the OP here, but being global they could actually fix that too.

First of all, i'm not bitching on this forum and i really don't want to.

It's Just a simple question, that's all.

i'm agree, a worldwide contest must be very difficult to handle and can't satisfied everyone.

Sure my government is not perfect, i know

So since your import taxes are so high, you expect Fender to import to your country and price them so they lose money on every guitar they sell? I would refer you back to Arjays' post about complaining to YOUR COUNTRY's GOVERNMENT to cure your local problem.

Read my other posts relating to this elsewhere. Our import taxes are not high at all. We even have a trade agreement with the US which means they are minimal and an incentive for US exporters.

You don't know the situation, but still make the first and only assumption that it can't possibly be of Fenders making. they can lower prices and still do very well. They don't want to.

As to OPs question in this thread, a global competition wouldn't actually be hard to organise, given Fender's local infrastructure in many countries.

Hold on friends. Let's see if we can clear some of this up perhaps to everyone's satisfaction.

Firstly, yes Fender is an internationally recognized BRAND. However FMIC, who owns the brand name and designs is the Scottsdale, Az based parent company of Fender, owns Fender's USA and Mexico manufacturing facilities. FMIC also contracts the Chinese plants that make some Fender products, is also the North American distributor. Yes Fender products are sold internationally, but Fender instruments are not distributed by FMIC outside of the USA.

When you buy a Fender product outside the USA that instrument is being imported by another Fender distributor based either in your home country or by a distributor within your nation's geographical region by a country with favorable trade relations with your country. This is a long standing situation.

It is not FMIC "excluding" your country arbitrarily. FMIC has contractual obligations with the distributor in your country not to infringe upon their territorial distribution rights. If FMIC shipped a Fender product as a prize to Rome, Italy for example then they would be violating the contract with M. Casale Bauer s.p.a. of Bologna which entitles M. Casale Bauer sole distribution rights in Italy.

Secondly, Fender does not even control Fender Japan beyond deciding what Fender Japan products FMIC will import for distribution in FMIC's North American territory. Fender Japan is a totally separate company that has licensed the Fender brand and designs for manufacturing and distribution in Japan.

The Chinese Fenders distributed by FMIC are contracted much in the same fashion as historically done with Fender Japan, however the difference there is that those manufacturing companies do not have any distribution rights in China for Fender products at all. Fender's distributor in China is GUANGZHOU FAST MUSICAL INSTRUMENT while the Fender products made in China are actually made by someone completely separate from Guangzhou Fast. Fender has recently established a corporate presence in China for quality control at the plants they contract to make Fender products in China and to assist in expanding the distribution network in China.

Thirdly, the distributor for your country or region is responsible for marketing Fender products in your country or region. Marketing expenses include advertising and promotions such as contests and sweepstakes in their territory. They are also responsible for maintaining their own service centers and warranty support in their territory.

Fourthly, (if that is a word,) as pointed out there are VAT and other import duties involved. For example in the Bahamas, 50% import duty would make a $2000 instrument or amp less appealing to the winner and in all likelihood the "winner" would never actually be able to pay the duty and tax.

Fifthly, (beats me if that is a word,) also as already pointed out in different nations there are a variety of different regulations for sweepstakes/contests and in some cases the rules are so restrictive that it would make it less appealing if not downright impossible to do any giveaway promotions if the rules were made acceptable to the regulations of every nation on earth.

There might be reasons I haven't thought of, but those are probably the top 5. So calm down and remember it is an internationally known brand however when you buy from outside the USA you are really buying from the distributor and not buying directly from FMIC. International distributorships are not a "permanent" arrangement and can change from year to year. In some countries there can be more than one distributor at a time which have different territories or rights or responsibilities within that country. For example there are two distributors in the Philippines and three in Taiwan.

Some fair points made in your post about distributorship. I've posted here about Australia's situation, as it's one of the few avenues to do so direct to Fender. I have contacted them locally and found them evasive, and couldn't care less. Those margins must be pretty good.

I'm not expecting parity pricing, just fairness.
