Last week I asked for a tip on recording what I play and got the great advice of using Audacity software on my laptop. This is marvelous!

I am having some trouble figuring out how to listen to what I am playing. As it is, the headphone jack is used for supplying input to the laptop. Is it possible to use the headphone jack with a Y-connector so that both the laptop and my headphones can get audio from the amp?

Your headphone jack is both the input and the output? That seems a little odd. Normally, the pink connector is the mic and the green is the speaker/headphone output, but they are separate connectors.

In any case, if you are tapping the amp at its headphone output, there is no reason at all why you couldn't connect a "Y" cable at the amp that splits into two outputs. One would go to your laptop and the other to your headphones. Radio Shack should carry a "Y" cable like that.

Sorry for being unclear about this. I assume you're referring to the color coded female connectors on the laptop. I plug the amp into the pink microphone female connector. If I plug my headphones into the headphones connector, I don't get any sound.

I don't think you will get any sound as the headphone are not set up to monitor what is being recorded. The software may allow for a configuration like that but I don't think your sound card is set up that way as a default.
Check the sound card and software documentation for help on setting up to monitor what's being recorded...or just listen to your amp as you have been doing. Good Luck!

Thanks for the insight. My amp is a G-DEC Jr, which has one audio output, so I have to use it either for headphones or for recording. Can't do both.

If you're using a Fender G-DEC jr., I can tell you how to work it. Just plug the line cable into the line in jack and then plug the other end into the "Headphone/line out" socket and click on record and it should record. Though, it would likely be wise that you're using the line in option instead of the microphone option.
