As for suing Tokai. Fender and Gibson couldn't do it, why would anyone think Rickenbacker could?

Ric have defended their patents since day one.

Fender and Gibson lost control of some body shapes because they didn't defend their properties for over 20 years. Protecting your intellectual properties is a huge component to winning those suits.

Agreed!

While it seems strange that Ric is asserting these things, they do have at least some right... however: "Rickenbacker is seeking both monetary and injunctive relief for its claims." That seems excessive. A cease & desist seems like it should be plenty, no?

Maybe they did that already and Lollar failed to "cease & desist"?

One thing I know about trademark law (which is what we're talking about here, any patents having run out decades ago) is that you have to actively protect your intellectual property, or you lose it. Rickenbacker will be simply following their lawyers' advice.

...A LOT of money washes under the bridge once the lawyers are involved.

Rickenbacker has their own pickups, for better or worse, it's up to you. They cost a lot, but they make a RIC a RIC and it's been a holy grail for decades. Danelecto made their own pickups, they're fantastic and cheap. I love both and both sounds are unique. Aftermarket pickups are just that. If you want to spend the money, good for you. Instruments are very personal, and it's nice we have the option to do what we wish. My preference is to keep the guitar stock, if I want another sound, I buy another guitar.

BTW, Ceri is right concerning lawyers. Our economy would probably collapse without lawyers to jump into the fray. Without them society would have to resort to assassins to settle disputes. Don't get we wrong. I'm not saying I love lawyers.

The Ric pups, and bridges work for the Ric. If you don't like the sound, use something else. But copies don't make it.
