It looks like it has finally happened. Jason quit the horseshoe biz a while back at least for steel.

Not good news for sure. Ric a corporate bully?

Gotta bolster that dwindling profit margin somehow.

How much do Ric sell? I know one person with one out of hundreds of players from all levels.

RIC is a family owned business. They don't compromise when it comes to their products.

That means they don't look the other way when someone tries to copy their products. It's why you don't see faux RIC's for sale.

Ric's pickups are $200 and Lollars are $450.

Two year waiting list to get one.

I think the world of Jason, but to be honest, I'm surprised this hasn't come up in the pickup world yet. The aftermarket pickup game is often all about getting as close to that patent/trademark line without crossing it.

While it seems strange that Ric is asserting these things, they do have at least some right... however: "Rickenbacker is seeking both monetary and injunctive relief for its claims." That seems excessive. A cease & desist seems like it should be plenty, no?

You have to demand more in order to leave room for negotiations and hopefully get what you really want. Someday I'll buy a Ric. Probably a 360/6 with natural finish. Not because I have any need for it, I've wanted one my entire life, so I'll have to scratch that itch eventually.

RIC makes a fantastic product, and yes they have a waiting list, so without a doubt others are going to try and cash in and fill the void. A RIC pickup is a RIC pickup, Lorrar has a good name but good god, it's only wire wrapped around a core, no more rocket science than one for $10 ($450!!). I must have a couple hundred pickups attached to guitars and they are all a matter of preference to each individual's ear.

Yeah they have busy lawyers, but they haven't squelched the after market pickup world. If you're selling a Strat pickup you need to call it "s-style" or indicate on your advertising that the terms "Strat" and "Stratocaster" are owned by Fender, but the pickups themselves have not been shut down, and there are a LOT of aftermarket Strat, Tele and Humbucker (which, let us not forget, originally appeared as an exclusive Gibson item) pickups out there.

There are even plenty that specifically reference times in those companies' histories and those seem to be doing just fine legally speaking. Ric vigorously defends their work product and intellectual property. Wouldn't you?

Rickenbacher designed, and maufactures their instruments, as Rickenbacker, not Joe Shmo copy and sell our instruments, parts etc. They should go after infringments on their products.

IMO, Ric could make more money in the long run if they use Lollar pups in a line of guitars. It just might help them get back in the game.

Rickenbackers problem is that they only make guitars of limited appeal, that are no where near worth the money they charge.
If you want to be Lemmy, Paul, John, or Tom Petty then yeah great. If you want a practical instrument that can cover a multitude of styles with ease, look elsewhere.

They did a Susanna Hoffs model in the early 90's that looked good, a signature 350. Aside from that, they've never done anything that remotely interested me as a guitar player.

As for suing Tokai. Fender and Gibson couldn't do it, why would anyone think Rickenbacker could?

Ric have defended their patents since day one.

Fender and Gibson lost control of some body shapes because they didn't defend their properties for over 20 years. Protecting your intellectual properties is a huge component to winning those suits.
