for those who don't know, the above refers to an episode of "happy days" back in the 70's. in the show, fonzie managed to jump over a shark (while skiing i believe). that is when the show took a turn for the worse, and "jumping the shark" became part of our lexicon.

my question to you all is: has one of your favorite bands ever "jumped the shark?" by that i mean you liked their music, but suddenly released a song that you just wonder what happened.

here is an example. i have been a beach boys fan since they came out. saw them 5 times in concert and always fun. then "kokomo" came out, and i just had to hurl  could be the only song by them i just do not like. but you will find someone who likes that song the best. i think "god only knows" , "good vibrations" and others when i put on the beach boys.

share your thoughts if you wish

Deep Purple.

David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes.

Shark jump of the very worst kind.

EDIT: I just remembered, they managed another shark jump by sacking Gillan and getting Jo Lynn Turner in.

I think it fairer the Stones shark jumped AFTER Emotional Rescue. There's still some classic sounding Stones on there.

Likewise Radiohead after OK Computer. Might as well be a different band.

Blackmore's Rainbow, when they put out Down To Earth. The beginning of the end...

Dylan "jumped the shark" after 'Time Out of Mind'.

Both Metallica and Megadeth. When they stopped drinking and taking drugs the song quality plummeted.

Genesis "jumped the shark" well before this song, but their worst moment (for me) as a band had to be the release of the song "Congo," from "...Calling All Stations..." in 1997, the first (and only?) album with vocalist Ray Wilson. There chorus lyrics went like this:

Send me to the Congo I'm free to leave
There's always somewhere anybody can lead
Send me to the Congo you have to believe
You can do it if you wanna just do what you please

It's really a bad song if you haven't heard it, my friends and I had a good laugh over it when it first came out.

Counterparts was pretty awesome. Unfortunately Test for Echo... uhhh yeah.

I thought Pearl Jam jumped the shark after their first album. I tried to like them after V's but i just felt like they were purposely trying NOT to write decent music because they didn't want anything to sound like it had structure to it.

No way man!! This album was WAY underrated. Lots of great songs here, just no recognition because there wasn't a "bee girl" running around. I love the song "No Rain", but it labeled a great band as a one hit wonder.
