This is where debate becomes pointless. I like the pickups, others don't. But hey, other people like neck pickups, I don't. Other people use tone controls on guitars, I disconnect them. What works for you doesn't work for me and yet we both manage to make noises that vaguely resemble the music we want to hear.

Buy one of each different model of pickup from every manufacturer and try them all. Preferably in a blind test so you don't know what brand you're hearing. Might be an expensive test but it'd guarantee you find a sound you like.

To return to the original question, I'd still recommend BK Slowhands to the OP. And as for the VN debate, I might just make a web page that plays you a selection of recordings of several different guitars and asks you to correctly identify the pickups.

I might do that right now. That'd be a real eye-opener!

Hot Golds have a little more punch with the neck pup. The 2 and 4 positions out of phase positions sound brighter than the regular Gold. Bridge pup (not the 12.7k) is hotter too.

Are they better? That is a matter of taste. The regular golds are closer to the regular Strat pups.

...So, an American Standard with a sweet tone, is your description.
And you play through a tube amp.

If you start tampering with stuff, sounds like things will get ugly before
they get any better. Higher gain, goodbye sweetness is likely.

We are subjective, and many of us obsess over things.
Start modifying and we lose reference.

A clean boost stomp sounds like the smartest choice. Yet some reviews are
not flattering on these, even hooked at the end of the path. Stage gaining
appears to always cause issues. Your amp driver will also respond differently,
so the previous sweet spot on the gain circuit disappears and you get mush.

I used to wonder why people kept various guitars AND various amps.
How devilish things can get! 8) Have you tried that Strat through a 4x10"?

In my case, things all around got better when I read this line in a
book by Carlos Castaneda, where the old Indian says,
-Perhaps you are chasing rainbows.

Just my two cents.

If your looking for high gain as in Metal you picked the wrong guitar. As suggested the Bk pickups would be your best bet but if you looking for a shred guitar look at esp.
