I have been sitting hunched over too much while playing and this is causing me some neck pain. Can you recommend good posture for playing? I'm inclined to switch to a standing posture.

I can't stand sitting to play! I never do. Just make sure you have a comfortable strap. A thin strap will really start to cut in after the third hour of playing.

I guess you could kinda play sitting on your couch, kinda a reference to what Skwisgaar Skwigelf does on Dethklok, if you've ever seen that show. I've done it before, its a little more uncomfortable but you get used to it sorta...

But if you're going to play standing up, get a VERY plush strap... Or the strap you will be using'll probably cut into your neck after a few minutes/hours.

Practice the way you play if you play with others. Your arms and wrist are in wholly different places sitting than standing. I'd guess I do 90% of my playing and practicing standing up.

I'm sitting most of the time when I play. Sometimes I get so focused on what I'm doing that I don't notice that I'm hunched over the guitar, driving the guitar into my chest muscles(like I have chest muscles). Later on I'll be tender and wonder why. It's the worst with my big 335.

I usually stand with electrics, and sit with Acoustics. I'm not very comfortable standing with Acoustics, or big Jazz Boxes.

yeah!!! I know how that goes. I always play sitting down, so then when I try to do something standing up it sounds like crap unless I know the song REALLY REALLY well!!

I gotta be standing up. It just feels funny to me to try to sit and play, and then it sounds like crap. Everyone is different, just be comfortable when you're playing.

i mostly play on my knee, the wrong one according to my old music teacher.
now i wish i had played with a strap more. i saw bb king live in victoria bc and after two songs he pulled out a chair and played on his knee just like i always had. so i say switch it up and one day you will know.

I have scoleosis, so I have no idea what good posture is. Some days it feels good to play sitting down, and others I have to stand up.

A couple good quotes on the subject:

“Wherever your guitar is when you’re sitting and practicing is where it should be when you’re standing. I discovered this the hard way. Years ago, I’d practice my solos sitting down—and I’d nail them—only to go to rehearsal and blow it because my right- and left-hand positioning was completely different when I stood up. Now, most players think it looks uncool to wear your guitar up high, but I think it’s cooler to sound kick $@! than it is to look cool and suck! Zakk Wylde slings his Les Paul really low, but as soon as a solo comes up, he’ll put his foot on a stage monitor to raise his guitar up. Hell, Tom Morello wears his guitar so high that he says it sometimes hits him in the chin. So, for the sake of killer guitar playing, raise ’em up!” —Rusty Cooley

“When playing while sitting, rest the guitar on your left leg—just like classical-guitar legend Andrés Segovia. This way, the guitar will be in the same position as when you stand. You can even get yourself one of those little foot stands to really anchor the guitar to your body when playing aggressive music.”—Dave Wronski

Stand up and jump around man! Work on your stage performance! Jump on your amp, kick stuff, yell, but just don't sit...unless you want to be like Nickleback or something...no offense to the fans of that band, I just don't prefer the music they make.

Sure, I'll sit down on certain songs, but I enjoy standing up more. BUT, if you're gonna play standing up, you need to do it almost every day, or else your stamina will be awful... :)
