I have this 6th sense to where I can tell when someone plays a musical instrument by looking at them and seeing how they act from a distance. It's weird, but I have yet to be wrong, and have picked up some good friends with it.

Try Bandmix. Probably similar to iPad app, previously mentioned.

The first band I got into was when I was in high school. That's probably one of the easier ways to get a band started. Word gets around pretty fast with who plays what instrument, and often those folks will find one another. So, if you're in school (sorry, I'm assuming you're younger -maybe high school or college age) I'd recommend just asking around, and eventually you'll find some people.

Another thing I'd recommend would be to just start going to shows as frequently as you can. Basement shows, or outdoor parties, or find the show space where everyone goes in your nearest city. That's a great way to meet people, and get involved in your local scene. When shows are small like that, often a lot of people in attendance are other musicians.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I've discovered that The Fender Lounge is definitely the best place to learn anything about music!

I don't get it. You should try it, though.

I think he laughed himself to sleep.
A lot of musicians look like serial killers and vice versa.

This Monday evening I'm meeting up with a musician that's looking for a rhythm guitarist for his band. Lets see how this goes. :)

I think it is easier to find a WIFE than it is to find a good drummer, based on my 48 years of live performance. I lived in Minnesota for 30 years, played out live in bands most of those and went through 3 bass players and 17 drummers! In all that time I was happily married to the same wonderful woman and I still am - but I have no drummers right now.

Putting a good band together with guys who can all get along and make good music is one very difficult thing to do... but it CAN happen!

GOOD LUCK!

Here is the Guide for starting a Band before the internet.
1.. Go to clubs where bands are playing, meet people that are in bands.
much better to have a face with who your talking to rather than rely on adds.
bands are always breaking up, so be quick to snatch up the player your looking for,
or just steal him from the band he / she is currently playing with.
Get in the local loop of things, the more people you know, the better your chances are.
2. Music stores, all musicians need to be there 1 time or another.
get to know the people that work there, read all posts if they have them.
some times word of mouth will get you the in you need for auditions.
3. Craigslist is ok for searching local musicians, Bandmix is a waste of time,
more wannabe's on that site than anything, they spend most of the time in the forums complaining, or trolling posts..
if they spent more time on their instrument, than in the forums, they might be better musicians.

In general, all musicians are flaky, Singers and Guitarists are top of the list.
I play guitar, but i'm a bit more humble than your average joe.
Singers and guitar players have, and always will be in struggle of controlling the band.
the better they are, the more problems... lol
