I have a very simple question for all you experienced bandmembers- How is the best way to start a band? I mean, how to find a drum player, bass player, etc.

Ask around, have friends who share a common interest and play an instrument. Learn to profile people based on look.

I have this 6th sense to where I can tell when someone plays a musical instrument by looking at them and seeing how they act from a distance. It's weird, but I have yet to be wrong, and have picked up some good friends with it.

The other day I downloaded an app called Band Friend for my iDevices and it's pretty cool. You make a profile and type your interests and you can look for people in your area with similar interests. Kinda neat, you should give it a shot.

If you can, find a drummer before you find a bass player.

put up an ad at a local music store. many of them have a bulletin board where they will let you put something up. craigslist might work too.

word of warning- be specific in your ad, but don't sound like a jerk. there are many ads out there that go unanswered because the poster sounds like an over-controlling person.

Simple. The easiest way to find a drummer is to order a Pizza from a Domino's. He should be there in 30 minutes or less.

Sam Ash used to have a 'want ads' section on their website that was so great, unfortunately they did away with that a long time ago. I think your best bet these days would be an ad on craigslist.

Last time I put a band together, it took some time before I had the final lineup, we went through some changes. But it was a fun process. :D

Because a band will sound more complete if it has a beat.

I've never used a bassist or wanted to. They're by far the most unreliable people on earth. (in my experience)

I'm fine with 2 or 3 piece setups.

Why? In a rock band, that's a huge part of what a bassist pays attention to. You can't trust a person you don't know to find a drummer you both agree on.

As a bassist the argument can be made from the other side. The last thing you want to do is get some clown drummer who kicks too much, or doesn't understand swing. For instance. Without a bassist a drummer can play straight 8th note 4/4 time while a guitarist can get away with playing 16th note style swings. You bring in a bassist and he will be screwed. He'll be stuck playing with a drummer who locks him into a very tight little box and ties him unnecessarily to a kick drum that is getting kicked more then it needs to be.

I'm a drummer for one guy and a guitar player for another. I don't think I can manage another position.

I have been struggling with this for 6 months. Asked same exact question here 6 months ago. Posted detailed, carefully written, thoughtful craigslist ad in my city. No success. Got 2 replies to craigslist add but the people faded away. I was seriously read to jam with this bassist....hasn't happened yet.

Really tough. I'm not lazy and I play my guitar nearly every day. But getting together with others is apparently an entirely different matter.

I even posted re: my age group and ability and style. I'm 38 but have been playing less than 3 years and my style is Nirvana-ish.

And the bassist who responded was similar...age, experience, musical taste. Yet we still never got together. Perhaps I'll email him again. THanks for the post!
