Am I the only one that does not develop calluses?
I've been playing guitar for over 5 years, and have never developed any. I can play for hours without any pain in my fingers, so it isn't really a big deal, however it does seem odd to me.

Meh, callouses are over rated. Wait till some gal goes mad cos you've laddered her stockings. You'll sand your hands flat to stop it happening again.

With my job, I've always had 'all over hand' callouses. When the banking crash happened and I spent prolonged periods not working but doing a lot of playing. I noticed my hands softened and that I didn't have finger tip callouses either.

I've recently had the pleasure of spending some time with some very speedy guitarists that were pretty much responsible for inventing the hardcore genre. Neither of them has hard hands. I think callouses are more of a technique issue for beginners. When you clutch too hard, you develop them. When you play properly, you don't need em so don't develop em.

Mind you, my hands are like leather at the moment so what would I know.

I started getting them a little more once I started playing more open chords and less power chords, where the flatter part of the finger is touching. But yeah....not really callouses...just tough enough that my fingers don't hurt. I don't even thing about that anymore.

I always thought calluses were more prone to form in guitarists starting out with soft fingertips. After years of playing I find all I have now is "tough fingertips", not really full-blown calluses.

I definitely have them.

I just started out 8 mos. ago and it took a long time for them to develop, but now I think my fingertips are 'hardened' w/o calluses.

cheers!

I have a mix of tough fingertips and calluses. What really toughened up my fingers was my acoustic. Those of you who think that calluses are only for beginners, clearly don't play a steel string acoustic!

Not only are my finger tips tough, but the bridge of my right hand is tough from palm muting.
all fingers have a slight callus on them, but have been worn smooth from playing 3 to 4 hours a day.
I did stop playing for about 12 years, and started back about a year and a 1/2 ago,
having to rebuild my calluses were once again a painful trip through memory lane.
play a few hours, and the tips were so sore, the next day i couldn't play as long, but would play through the pain.
within a week i started to see the progress of them starting to form, they would peel off a few times,
and now there are like little smooth rocks.

I play steel string acoustic just as much, if not more, than I play electric, and I still don't get calluses. Now I'm not complaining or anything, I just think it's weird. It's not like I'm playing simple stuff either, I play intricate blues and jazz things, I also play hard rock, and I know a fair bit of classical.

Not sure on your practice routine, but how long do you play for at a time.?
if your not getting the pain from pressing the strings down over a period of time,
you may not be playing long enough, an hour a day i do not think will build them,
unless your action is an inch off the fretboard... or you have very soft fingers

I've been playing for about a year and a half, and right when I started playing I developed calluses. Around six months into playing, the calluses disappeared and I haven't seen them since.

It could be something to with the type of guitar you play. It may just be me, but it seems like you develop calluses easier with an acoustic rather than an electric.

I've done lath and plaster as a trade for the past 40 years, so my hands have gotten beat up pretty regular. Yet, I have really large callusses. I'm even developing one on my pinky which I never had before. I think how much you bend has something to do with it. I've been on a Duane Allman kick for a while.

if your not doing much bending notes, it will take a bit longer.

I have been playing for about 45 years now but I don't have any callouses,my fingertips are as tough as Rhino hide but there aren't an callouses whatsoever.I had callouses the first couple of years playing but after that the skin just became thick and tough.

I don't have them now but have had them a few times over the years. For me it happens when I play a lot more than usual ie: when preparing for the studio or an important gig.
