Anyone here a tech? Seem to be having some action issues, been screwing around with it for the past hour. :x I get debilitating buzzing on the first three frets, no matter what my string height is. Neck seems to be straight, bridge is at a slight angle, not really going to mess with that, as the person I got it from did it for some unknown reason because it arrived broken. Thanks for the help.

It is a misconception that the neck should be arrow straight.

What do you mean "it arrived broken" and the "bridge is at an angle" as both need some explaining and need some photos of bridge area. These basses are notoriously easy to setup. The bridge angle thing is bothering me and if it arrived broken it should have been sent back.

Here are two setup guides that work.
http://www.fender.com/support/articles/bass-guitar-setup-guide/
http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/setupmanual.html

It could be the bridge is at fault, or it could need some attention to the offending frets. I'm guessing the neck needs more relief.

Without seeing it, and in fact touching it, it is hard to say what the exact cause is.

I'm also thinking possible neck twist.

If those setup guides don't do it for you, I have links to other setup guides on my bass website here: http://brotherdave.com/add_maint.htm

Thanks for responding, I should have specified it's a guitar, not a bass. I can't post pictures right now, but you were right.

I bought it new from my local music shop after ordering it in, the guy I bought it from (who I happen to know pretty well) said it was broken when it arrived; he did not specify what was wrong, just that it was fixed. About the bridge, from the perspective of the very bottom of the body, the bridge leans to the right, and I'm having problems with the E string.
Again, thanks for your help!

You might try posting in the Squier guitar forum, it is down the board index, near the bottom.

You could have a high fret or two. If you can, take it to a tech with and fret rocker tool and he should be able to tell for sure. :)

"debilitating buzzing on the first three frets"

This is almost always a result of back bow. Even if you think the neck looks straight, a back bow can be hard to see. Just back your truss rod off about 1/4 turn, see if that helps.

Another issue could be your nut, what gauge strings are on it? have you gone form a heavier to a lighter gauge?

Start with trying to address a potential back bow issue tho.

Rule one of fret buzz is stop trying to fix it by raising the action!

You can't set the action until you've set the neck relief correctly. All you'll do is jack the strings higher and higher and even then there may still not be enough clearance to stop the buzzing.

Here's the official guide ...

http://www.fender.com/en-GB/support/art ... tup-guide/

If the neck doesn't have enough "bow" - i.e. it's arrow straight - then as the strings vibrate they will hit the frets and buzz. Releasing some tension from the truss rod allows the neck to bow further under the pull of the strings, thus giving clearance for the strings to vibrate freely.

Tune to pitch, capo at the first fret, hold down the string at the last fret, measure the string clearance at the 8th fret with feeler gauges. If there's not enough clearance (i.e. your neck's too straight) then you need to slacken the truss rod (lefty loosey, righty tighty) an 8th of a turn at a time until the clearance is correct. I leave guitars to settle overnight after hefty truss rod adjustments, check again the next day and then set the action with the bridge height adjusters.

If that process scares you or you don't have the right tools to hand then give the job to a repairman. Or a repairwoman. Let's be politically correct about this.
