Just for fun I included bought a couple of sets of flatwounds from Guitarfetish with my last order. I put a 12-49 set on my old Squier II that I like for slide playing. Its a real different experience. Much more subdued sound. While these are certainly not the best strings you can buy its been a enlightening experience. No particular goal in sight just for the fun of it.

I am looking at some better grade flatwounds to try on other Strats. The smallest I can find is 10-46.

I'd be very interested in hearing a sound clip if you can post one. I've often wondered about the sound of them.

Best regards,
Phil

Over twenty years ago I decided to try flat wound strings. Big, painful mistake on my part.

I am definitely not a fan of flatwounds. They're even less useful on a bass than they are on a guitar IMO. Dull, thudding and lifeless if you ask me. Also, they can chew up your fingers pretty good. You wouldn't think so since they're flat but the edges of the the individual flats can often be sharp and as the string stretches when you tune it up a very slight gap between the windings can appear and those sharp edges can become exposed. I will never play flats again after they chewed up my fingers on a bass some 30 years ago. That was my first and last experience with flatwounds.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

totally depends on the guitar.

I've got a few full sized archtops, ime they are the perfect string for these guitars.

I don't think I'd even consider loading them up on any of my solid bodies or semi hollows.

I've used flatwounds quite a bit. My motivation for using them was to get rid of all the squeaking from my sloppy playing. It worked.

I have used them on my old Telecaster bass. The dull thudding sound can be appealling when using a lighter gauge set, 100-80-60-40. I've been thinking about putting a set on love, my red P-bass to see if I can get the sound of my old Tele bass.
