if i'm going to get another guitar, it'll have to be cheap (note the name)
and if i'm going to want an amp with that, it'll need to be like under 500, can't go much higher

i mostly want a squier strat, but is there anything better?

What you played might of been a deluxe. THe one I have is a standard.

From what I understand, Slightly higher quality materials are used on Americans and things like that

I have a MIM Standard strat that I bought for around $360. I think they've gone up now, to close to $400. I've been happy with it and it has served me well.

The MIM Strats are well made guitars and would be better than a Squier Strat in my opinion.

You can get a Made in Mexico Standard Stratocaster. If you can't find one at your local guitar shops, you could get one from eBay The only bad thing about eBay is that you don't get to try out the guitar first.

I've seen a lot of good deals on craigslist.com in my area. Every once in a while one of the deluxe or special edition MIM's pops up for $300-500.

www.craigslist.org is a great place to hunt for guitars/basses. The Jazz Bass I'm picking up tonight is one I found through craigslist.

I purchased a 1996 Fender Fat Strat with a nice SKB hardshell case at a local shop for $300 out the door. It was in excellent condition, and in my opinion, a GREAT deal!
I know that some people don't like dealing with pawn shops, but folks get into financial trouble, and need to unload their stuff. I have found some awesome deals at my local shops. Look around and see what you find.

If you can find a MIJ Squier Strat made between 1984-1987, you will have an excellent instrument and will likely only pay between $150-200 for it. Many of these guitars sported locking tremolos manufactured by Shaller, very good machine heads, solid alder bodies and pretty decent pickups.

You will want to look for a serial number beginning with the letter "E".

Mexican Strats retail for 600 and normally sell for about $450
