I would definitely play a Screamin' Armadillo Signature Strat. Right down to the fire-branded Armadillo logo on the body. None more cool. 8)

Then I'd start bashing out Just Got Paid... and everyone would be entirely clear that I can't sound like Billy Gibbons no matter how hard I try!

I like the big neck profile of the SRV and Jeff Beck Strats. I like the neck (and looks) of the Muddy Waters Telecaster. I like the sound of the Big Dipper pickups (one of the approxiamately 426 different John Mayer signature Strats has those pickups)...all of these features aren't easily found in other production models

Aha! I was waiting for a comment like this. Neck profiles can be altered in any guitar- as long as there is enough wood for a luthier to 'play' with- so say you wanted an 'SRV' or a 'Wolfgang' neck carve and if your neck allowed it- then you can get this done without the expense of a signature model. You could even tailor it to your own tastes, say have the general shape you desire- but not so pronounced... It's possible. Nikininja altered his neck shape on his black Strat.. remember? I think he called it a "compound neck shape" -clever lad.

As for individual pickups- if they are only sold on said guitar, it doesn't mean that there isn't an aftermarket pickup out there in the market that sounds very identical.. or the same. Again, that's clever marketing that adds to the appeal and uniqueness.

Anyone with the know, or knows a good luthier can make a very good 'tribute' of their own -which obviously appeals to me. However if the need was to still opt for a signature, then either the guitar is spot-on spec wise for what you want. Or you'd truly desire the axe of choice for an idol. In the case of an SRV Strat, you'd really be hard done by finding someone who bought one, yet didn't want to emulate his playing in anyway. Or a Clapton Strat where the person who purchased wasn't a fan at all. Because today, you can buy much lesser expensive products that have the same pickups & sound

Is there a Nile Rodgers out already? Or perhaps his is a 57 with no mods to make it uniquely his own?

Hi Blertles: if memory serves, Nick took a full-ish neck and gave it more of a V-shape. I don't remember if he compounded the frets, but certainly you can do that just with the way you level the frets without even touching the fingerboard. As you say, many things are possible.

However, you couldn't turn a regular MIM or MIA Strat into a SRV or a Beck or even a '50s spec instrument: you can't make a slim neck fatter. There's limits.

And that Beck neck in particular is very unusual in the catalog. A guy who wants that sort of shape doesn't have many options - that's the kind of thing an Artist model can legitimately do for us.

Cheers - C

No longer used.

The last time Eric played a goldleaf onstage dates from 2001. He stopped using his Crashocasters shortly after the 2004 world tour. Daphne Blue was retired from active service in November 2011.

Yes of course- you cannot 'add' wood to a neck. I was merely making a reference to the latest Beck Strat where he has taken the neck shape back down to a 'C'. You would have to go to a previous model for that larger neck. The best you could possibly take is either a '70s U shape and perhaps give that more of an SRV or Wolfgang carve, or a shallower D shape for a shallower, less pronounced shape. Or customise to your own tastes.

This is true, but point was that other people might not know that they were EC Strats.

So after reading everyone's postings, I've come to the conclusion that people really don't want signature models.

Unforeseen and interesting.

Alas, I was too timid to actually brand the SA Sig Strat or Tele just yet...I have to practice on a guitar I don't love.

Does anyone volunteer their guitar for a branding experiment?

It would be cool to be able to add girth to a neck, but I agree with Ceri's assessment...it's a one-way path that only goes toward slimmer...

I'm not sure that's true...

Fender sells every Artist guitar they make and some, like the EC, EJ and Mayers go flying out the door.

They can't all be hanging on the wall of somebody's Den.

When making my choice, it was between the FSR Am. Vtg. '57 and the Eric Johnson (didn't even know who Eric Johnson was at the time). I chose the Am. Vtg. simply because it felt better to me.

Cheers!

If you want a guitar that's a tweaked version of a US Standard Stratocaster ... then why not buy a US Standard Stratocaster and tweak it yourself?

I'll add, that you'd have an equally worthy instrument. I must say also, if you were ever unfortunate you had to sell it would be easier to sell (as long as it's priced correctly). As for used 'artist signature' buyers, there are very fewer around.

But however for an SRV Strat that retails for $3500, I can get an American Standard for $2299... To me there is more value in an American Std. Or I'd rather spend an extra $100 over the SRV and get an American Select Strat or American Vintage series.

I generally would stay away from any sig guitar. the only one that i would consider would be SRV's Charley guitar with the lipstick pickups.

I need to say about the billy corgan strat, I had one and sold it shortly after because it was possibly the worst sounding fender i have ever played, no fender magic at all in that guitar. I should have figured as much as he is not a very good player and his music isn't exactly good.

LOLZOZLZOZZZLOZL. Go to 36:40 of this:

And he's had about 25 years of practice since then.

Also, Corgan plays 80% of his songs on tour since 2008 with his sig model, off the rack, no special version created for him.
