I think Fender should offer more customability at a lower price. Like the artists that make two different models of their signatures, Custom Shop and FMIC. Just an idea... :D

Most of the time anything with the word "Custom" will be more expensive. Just learn how to customize things yourself. As much as I like Fender, I find it hard to pay $650 for a MIM Esquire when the MIM Telecasters cost $200 less but has 2 pickups as opposed to the Esquire's single pickup. To me, a guitar with 2 pickups should cost more than a guitar with one pickup....Plus Esquires are only currently offered in 3 colors. So my options were buy one anways, get a custom one built, or figure out how to customize a decent Esquire-Tele "platform" into the guitar I want...I went with the 3rd option. I am currently in the middle of my project, but once completed, I will have a Squier Standard Candy Apple Red, Rosewood neck, Esquire for $300 less than its Fender big borther. You don't see too many red Esquires these days, and I built it myself with features and parts I wanted....DIY custom guitars, because think of it, customizing or building your own custom guitars was what you had to do before you had custom shops or large custom guitar makers....

I think it would be nice if there were some custom features to models already in production.

They already offer several models with SSS vs HSS. Why not do the same thing for other features. Maybe offer locking tuners (just as an example) as an option (higher price, of course) on certain standard models already in production. I've often seen prices on standard models that offer the three tone sunburst for a slightly higher price. Why not do that for other options?

I keep reading how people buy a guitar.......then immediately change out the pickups. Why not have a pickup option? If the pickups cost a little more than what's offered with the standard configuration, then charge that "little more".

Heck....I've "custom ordered" computers (online purchase on their site). Take Dell for example. They offer their basic models......but within those models, I can opt out for a different chip, more RAM, or a bigger hard drive. They just tack on the additional costs.

I think something like that (choosing options) would be great for guitar purchases.

I think it'd be awesome if you could order a guitar just like you would a computer. Pick a base that you like, choose color, choose pickups/configurations, choose pick guard... all a bit bit of an extra cost of course.

Once guitar building gets to the point where humans can be eliminated and everything can be done automatically by machines and computers, it will be able to be done. Computer manufacturers can offer "custom" computers because there are only certain components that can work well with certain processors or motherboards, so even though its "custom" there are only a set number of choices that can be made, depending on what form factor, motherboard, and processor you choose, and mainly because most of the manufacturing process is automated. While certain things with guitar manufacturing can be automated, there are still many steps that need to be overseen by humans, and thats why customized guitars on a large scale is hard to achieve....I mean even Carvin, who is pretty much a large custom guitar maker, still cannot get their prices down to a point where I think its would seem affordable to everyone....
