Country singer George Jones, who awed listeners with his ability to immerse himself in his songs and compelled them to do the same, has died. He was 81 years old.

Jones was a revelation in the country music culture – equal parts vocal phenom and bad boy – whose drinking and impulsiveness made him just as legendary as his performances.

Rest easy, Mr Jones :(

"The Best Friend A Song Ever Had" is gone and quite a loss to old-school country fans.

Perhaps he'll be remembered as the #1 songwriter's performer of all time. It was said that having him record one of your tunes was a feeling roughly equivalent to winning a Grammy.

He had lots of regrets. "I had all the luck in the world, but I just didn't use it right." Those life experiences accounted for lots of his empathetic vocal stylings.

Saw "No-Show Jones" actually show up for gigs twice! Surprised both times. I thought he was very energetic, focused and a great entertainer both times. When he did "White Lightning" he always gave that shimmy and leg kick that brought out a few shouts from the crowd. I half-way expected him to not give a flip and just limp through his set, but he obviously cared about his fans a lot and both times that I saw him Mr. Jones put on a great show while also making it seem easy and natural. Once I saw him on a bill with Randy Travis at the height of Travis' early popularity. Jones opened for Travis. He outperformed the far younger Travis and was far more "into it" keeping the audience involved and engaged. Sort of reminded me of when Led Zeppelin opened for Iron Butterfly. Jones and Zeppelin are both hard acts to follow. No matter what comes to the stage after them it just isn't as impressive as the opening act. I like Randy Travis, but he's just sort of a stand there and sing guy. Jones entertained in ways beyond his vocal talents, which were alone quite considerable. George also famously played FENDER acoustic guitars. I don't know if he ever was a Fender endorsing artist or not, but he almost always was playing a Fender and was both times I saw him live in the 80's.

George Jones was an original and totally unique individual with an intriguing bad-boy personality. The only old-school country male solo vocalist contemporary he had that came anywhere close to making a great song out of a mediocre one was Vern Gosdin, who sadly is also gone. But it was Jones who was the most fascinating both on and off stage and who sold more records and concert tickets. Vern Gosdin is as good a country singer as Jones but Jones swaggering personality and turbulent hard living reputation is an inescapable component of why he was such a celebrity.

Jones long time and troubled romance with Tammy Wynette was legendary and one of the great love stories in American music at large, even now nearly 40 years after their divorce the Tammy and George story is still interesting to their fans. In a sense they were the American version of John and Yoko Lennon. People talked about George and Tammy at the barber and beauty shops coast to coast. Their romantic woes were often fodder for tabloids too as George's behavior made great feature stories. The incident where he literally shot down Tammy's chandelier is a classic. The most infamous episode was when Tammy took away his keys so he couldn't drive to get more liquor since he'd already had too much, so he just took off on his riding mower and rode it full steam ahead until local police caught up to him (after a rumored phone tip from a fed up Tammy) and captured his arrest on a dash-cam VHS video tape.

Tammy and George recorded tons of duets. The only duet albums anywhere near as successful by otherwise independent stars of the day were the ones by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. Those two duos worked exceedingly well and so far have been unequaled in popularity by any country male/female duos made up of solo stars since.

I never heard him say one bad word about Tammy. Where Tammy Wynette, also gone, is concerned, I truly believe that, "He Stopped Loving Her Today."

Now I think I know where my dad got the idea for his flat-top haircut.

And that was some nice early lip-synch work.

In 1982 I bought my first Fender Superb Reverb, a 1964 model, from a fellow who used to play rhythm in George Jones' road band. George actually bought him the amp and it was all he had left but memories in 1982. This guy, who shall remain nameless, used to get drunk so much that George threw him out of the band - twice! Wow!

Just heard on the news he released 160 singles, a record in any genre of popular music. In his prime...."The Corvette Song"
