I'm looking for a smaller, amp one that is different then my Crate GFX-15 but about the same size and might even replace it. The amp can be 4-15 watts, and can it doesn't even have to have it's own overdrive channel. I guess I'm looking for something punchy, dirty not necessarily clean and pristine, something that doesn't have a ton of controls/effects. I've heard of the Orange Tiny Terror, Goodsell amps, and VHT amps. My price range is $300-gulp maybe $1,500 (but probably way lower). Any hints would be much appreciated!

Note: The Vox A4 and the Roland Micro Cube are not what I'm looking for. Any hints would be appreciated! :)

That rules out the Mustang series

I'd have to cast another vote for the Pro Junior, it seems like a perfect match.

The Vox VT-20 is a killer 20 W amp that has 33 different amp models that range from clean Fender Twin tones to a full-tilt metal Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier metal raunch. It also has 11 deadly effects that sound incredibly like the real thing such as the Univibe,Leslie and other modulating effects as well as an excellent reverb/echo section that has several types of reverb such as hall, spring, plate etc. and the echos are also various types. These small amps are incredibly tube-like in their tone as they have a 12ax7 tube in the power amp section as opposed to the preamp in most other hybrids which really has tone that's pretty well impossible to tell from an actual tube amp.

The Vox Pathfinder 15R is a great little 15W amp that also sounds very tube-like plus it has great reverb and tremolo functions. It also has a footswitchable boost function that really adds a punch to your tone whenever you want.

The Marshall Valvestate series also has some great hybrids that have much the same function as the Voxes but with that famous Marshall roar when driven hard.

Check out the next issue of Guitar Player magazine. They review some pretty cool small amps including a Gretsch five watter. I'm a subscriber so I get the issues early.

I wouldn't rule out building a 5f1 champ kit. About the simplest one comes from Tube Depot. It uses a PCB and is a real easy build with great instructions. You'll learn something and get a lot of satisfaction in knowing you built it yourself.

I agree, I don't care for a ton of cheesy built in effects and a bunch of knobs, bells and whistles.

Blues JR is a 15 watt tube amp that sounds real nice, probably around 500. Then there's always pawn shops...

Thanks for all of your responses! I'm still looking though for something that has crunch and dirt. The Pro Junior may or may not have either one of those descriptions. :)

Different when your Crate?

As someone already said, Excelsior. That's a lot of amp for the money.
