I was just wondering if anybody can point out the characteristics of a, say a fake Fender Stratocaster. I know there're probably past threads about this but I'm a relative newbie.

I can tell you a sure fire way to avoid buying one.

Only buy new from a dealer with 30 odd on the wall.

What that meant Jim is a actual Fender authorized dealer. For me to list every item that could be changed to make a Fender guitar not 100% Fender would cost you dinner and a few cocktails. The short version is much less expensive. :)

still not great help though, are you suggesting done ever buy second hand ? buying from a dealer will make sure youve brought genuine, but its much better value to buy good second hand, let somebody else take the hit of overpriced guitars.

its much easier to check if you provide pictures of a specific guitar youre considering. in general though, headstock shape, headstock decal, truss rod plug, on a strat the location of screws on the backplate. sometimes a guitar will be made from all genuine fender parts, but not put together form the factory.

do your research and you should get it right.

Another suggestion would be to post pictures of the guitar you are thinking about buying and let the Guru's on here tell you if it could possibly not be 100% origional or possibly a fake.

I'd suggest grabbing a coffee and having a good read through this thread - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=35431&hilit=fake

You'll find some good tips in there. No need to pay new prices if you take a little time to inform yourself.

To be honest, in 22 years of guitar buying, I've only ever seen two fake Fenders in actual shops, and both of those were heavily used, labelled as not being authentic and sold at rock bottom prices - most music shop owners are quite aware of the reputation they'd get (and the legal trouble they could get into!) for selling fakes at real prices, so if you go anywhere reputable, the odds are in your favour.

you'll also find people are reluctant to spell out in one message all the things that can make a Fender "fake", because it would be an all-too-handy guide for people who are casual tricksters.

Exactly. I wholly regret the amount I've written on this site on identifying fake guitars. Why offer free advice to those that would con Joe Public. Hence my only advice on avoiding one as being to buy new from a dealer.
Oh and if you are buying a guitar with a view to sell it later, you probably shouldn't be buying it. If it's not worth the new price, then don't buy it. Abstinence is only way the buying public can affect sale prices.
