I just recently bought a new guitar for about $1,200. It's the most that I've ever paid for a guitar, and had doubts if it would make more of a difference in quality, if I spent that much. I considered it a once in a lifetime purchase, and might even be the last guitar I buy (I'm older than dirt, you know).

I had the extra money for the purchase, so I finally figured, "why not?". When the guitar arrived, and I played it, I could tell immediately that it was well worth the money. I found the workmanship superior to any of the other guitars that I own. And the sound was incredible, after playing my less expensive guitars. So for me it was worth it. Especially if it was my once in a life time purchase for a guitar.

I own three electrics and two acousticals. So I'm probably done buying guitars, unless something happens to one of them.

I paid around 300$ for my first foreign guitar, 600$ for the next MiM, then 900$ for a American Standard and finally 1300$ for a American Deluxe.
Was it worth it, YES it was to me!

My mate paid 2500$ for a Gibson, and a music teacher I know paid 10,000$ to have a silver flute custom made.

It is all what you think it is worth to you.

I am about to buy another very cheep axe maybe squire or epiphone to take on a month long kayaking trip. Something that won't bother me if I dump it in a lake.
(ya nuts I know, but I don't think I can go a month without)

twangee, and a bunch of you other guys who are upset about high prices - hey im left handed. I get a limit on the color I want and sometimes its a bit more pricey. but i dont mind it, I got a mexican strat with noiseless pickups on ebay for only 355. and it had a pearl pickguard.. its like what everyone else said, it depends on you. but on ebay theres always great deals coming by and what not. theres always fenders too.

Everybody is different, as long as you are happy with what you got and it sounds good. My buddy has a couple Lakland 55-94's and he paid something like $3400-3800 each. Would I spend that much on a bass? No, not unless I hit the lotto or make it big time. The tops for me is probably $2000. I have yet to spend over a grand on a bass, but that could change on my next purchase.

You can build yourself one heck of a guitar for less than $1000 and it would be exactly what you wanted. That will likely be my next move as I think that I've really pushed the financial envelope with my wife. There's only so much mental health allowance I can squeeze out at once.

Not taking inflation into account, the most I ever paid for a guitar was $1500.

You'll have to document that one. As I understand, the world record for the sale of a guitar is held by the Christie's auction of Eric Clapton's "Blackie"... $959,500. That's just a little more than million bucks shy of 2 million.

I made myself a promise not to spend over a $1000 dollars on a guitar unless I could pay for it with Guitar Playing. Same with amps, except that's a $1500 moritorium.

I am not saying you can not get a good guitar at a low cost but in most case if you spend 1500 on one you will no the differance. Nice action
tight fit , keeps tune, high quility electronics, nice finish.

I think it all depends on the guitar--but I will say this--many guitars over $1000 are overpriced. Especially limited edition & signature models--they tend to be way over priced--case in point the Fender Custom Shop Frankenstrat.

I wouldn't buy one anyway--so it doesn't matter how much it cost--but way overpriced.

So is a late 50's Les Paul Sunburst going for 1000's of dollars based on its looks.

How much is to much money for a guitar?

Here is your answer: Anything sold by Gibson.

I mean they are nice guitars, and while I'd love to own an Cherry Faded SG, I just highly doubt its worth paying $2500+ for it
.
Any guitar between the ranges of $400 and $1200 is an amazing guitar from my expierience.

However Epiphone is a good alternative.

Power Chord King, 'bought a new faded brown Gibson SG last month for $700 with case from SA in metro Chicago.

Dot inlays, no binding, no pup covers, no vibrato, no glossy finish, simple headstock decal, plays like a dream. Also tried out a faded cherry, same price.
