One of the stops the following week on tour with the Browns was in Booneville. Days earlier the Colonel saw them at the Hayride and began talks with Bob Neal. see
http://scottymoore.net/booneville.html

Image
The day after Booneville the tour hit Corinth, MS. Click on the link to read the story and articles http://scottymoore.net/corinth.html

After Corinth the tour took them to Sheffield, AL and Leachville, AR before finishing the week in Sikeston, MO. In Sikeston they met Onie Wheeler who would ... well read the page http://scottymoore.net/sikeston.html

After Sikeston they were all back in Shreveport for their weekly commitment to the Hayride. That night a fan took what may have been the first color photo of Elvis, Scotty and Bill performing. Read more about it here http://scottymoore.net/hayridecolor.html

Image
Starting the 24th they were back on tour with Jim Ed and Maxine Brown in the Gladewater area. These dates were booked by Tom Perryman. On the 25th they made their first appearance in Tyler. see the page http://scottymoore.net/tyler.html for pix and details

Image
The day after Tyler, the 26th, they made their first appearance in Gilmer, TX. This was one of the shows where Maxine described upstaging Elvis. Click the link to read about it http://scottymoore.net/gilmer.html

I deviate from my Chronological sequence of posts a bit to add this, which should precede the others
http://scottymoore.net/article500609.html

Back on track and moving right along, from Gilmer the tour with Jim Ed and Maxine took them for their first appearance at the REO Palm Isle in Longview. Be sure to hit this link

They get around
and in the early days before the Cadillacs it was by Scotty's wife Bobbie's 53 Chevy Bel Air. check out http://scottymoore.net/53chevy.html

Image
By the end of January and early February they were back in Memphis supporting Bob Neal's son at school see http://scottymoore.net/messick.html for more pix

Early in February they played New Orleans the first time where they met "Ann Raye," and more importantly her father. see http://scottymoore.net/jesuitHS.html for the story

On February 5th the Press Scimitar published a feature article about the band and Sun in preparation for their appearance the following day at Ellis. see http://scottymoore.net/articles.html

Image
On February 6, the day after the Press-Scimitar article, they made their first appearance at Ellis Auditorium and in between shows formally met the Colonel for the first time. Things were about to change. see for more pix and story http://scottymoore.net/ellis.html

I want to Believe.
Having played Lubbock days before (for the second time) in what is considered the first booking obtained through the Colonel and Jamboree attractions, Roswell on the 16th was the first appearance they made with Hank Snow and the Jamboree (not counting it was Hank who introduced them at the Opry). read on at http://scottymoore.net/roswell.html

That week saw more dates in Texas and then back to the Hayride on Saturday. On Feb 20th they started a tour which included the Carter family and their first appearance in Little Rock see http://scottymoore.net/littlerock.html

next stop on the tour was Camden, AR on the 21st with the same line-up. see http://scottymoore.net/camden.html

"and my machine she's a dud, all stuck in the mud. . ."
On the 22nd they made their first appearance in Hope and everyone had the hots for Anita. see http://scottymoore.net/hopeAR.html

After a stop in Pine Bluff, AR on the 23rd they were back in Louisiana for a show in Bastrop, an elementary school on the 24th. see http://scottymoore.net/bastrop.html

The first time north of the Mason-Dixon line was when Bob Neal took them to Cleveland, on February 26th. They would return there the following October. see
http://scottymoore.net/circletheater.html

Back in the South again, they played two shows in Newport, AR. The first at the Armory, and later that night at Porky's rooftop. see the sections on this page about Batesville, courtesy of Frankie Rider II http://scottymoore.net/batesville.html#armory

On St. Patrick's Day, the 17th, they made their first of 4 appearances in Austin (or the vicinity) following in the steps of Hank Williams at Dessau Hall. see

Looks like I missed a week
Quote:
Dermott HS, Coley's Truck stop and an after party with the band.
After Austin they had a few gigs in Houston before they headed back into Arkansas. On the 25th they were in Dermott see http://scottymoore.net/DermottAR.html

From Dermott it was back to the Hayride and then a few stops in Mississippi and then on the 30th they made their first appearance El Dorado, AR on the 30th. At least as early as Dermott, they had been traveling in Elvis' pink Cadillac, his first one. see http://scottymoore.net/eldorado.html

On April 2 they were back in Houston for their first appearance at the City Auditorium. Read on for some odd coincidences surrounding other artists who played there
http://scottymoore.net/houstonAud.html

In mid April, on the 16th, they made their first of several appearances at the Big D Jamboree held in Dallas at the Sportatorium. Later that night they played the Round up club which was reputed to have been a hang out of Bonnie and Clyde's read on here http://scottymoore.net/sportatorium.html

On April 23rd they made their first appearance in Waco during a remote broadcast of the Louisiana Hayride, one of the few times each year the show hit the road. Associations were likely made there that would lead to later bookings, and some trouble the following year. read on http://scottymoore.net/waco.html
Image

After Waco, they made two stops in Houston on the 23rd to play at Magnolia Gardens (see http://scottymoore.net/houston.html#MAG ) and Cook's Hoedown ( see http://scottymoore.net/houston.html#CHD ) before heading to their first appearance in Wichita Falls, TX where they found out they also were booked in Seymour, TX see http://scottymoore.net/MBCorral.html

The next night, on the 26th, they were still on tour with Dub and played in Big Spring, TX where they stopped by The Record Shop. see http://scottymoore.net/bigspring.html

On the 29th the tour took them back to Lubbock for an appearance at the Cotton Club where Ben Hall would shoot home movies of them backstage. The film often get edited together with later stuff Ben shot backstage causing many to think the artists all appeared together. They didn't. See here for the film and story http://scottymoore.net/lubbock.html#CC
Image

On the 30th they performed another remote broadcast of the Hayride because the Auditorium in Shreveport was occupied. This time they were back in Gladewater TX, at the High School see the link for the story, photos and audio http://scottymoore.net/gladewaterHS.html

On May 1, 1955, Elvis, Scotty and Bill began a three week, near riotous, tour with Hank Snow's All-Star Jamboree with their first appearance at the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans. see http://scottymoore.net/neworleansmuni.html
Image

The following day the tour took them to the High School in Baton Rouge, LA where Johnny Rivers got the Memphis info. For this tour the boys were added to the souvenir program, click the link to flip through one http://scottymoore.net/hanksnowshowpbook.html
Image

"Stuck in Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again"
On the 4th and 5th the tour took them to Ladd Stadium where Elvis was chased across the field like a quarterback trying (not) to score. check it out at http://scottymoore.net/mobile.html
Image

On the 7th the tour took them to their first date in Florida, at the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona, where they would also meet Mae Axton. see http://scottymoore.net/daytona.html
Image

The next stop on the tour was Tampa at the Armory where on a return visit the Colonel would have a photo taken that would be used in future advertising and even on the cover of the first album. Check it out at http://scottymoore.net/FtHomer.html

After Tampa the tour made stops in Ft. Meyers and Ocala before hitting Orlando on May 11 where Elvis would pose with fans and look very much like his Grandson. see http://scottymoore.net/orlando.html

Image
From Orlando they went to Jacksonville for two days of shows at Wolfson Park (not quite the Gator Bowl). The pandemonium that ensued is what Mae said sealed the deal with the colonel on the kid's earning potential. see http://scottymoore.net/wolfson.html

Image
After two days in Jacksonville then one in New Bern, NC the tour took them to Norfolk, VA for their first appearance at the Municipal Auditorium on the 15th. See for a better pic(s) and venue info http://scottymoore.net/norfolk.html

Image
On the 16th the tour took them for their first appearance at the Mosque Theatre in Richmond. Just over a year later on a return appearance Al Wertheimer would shoot a series of photos there, one of which made the news recently. see http://scottymoore.net/richmond.html

The following day, the 17th the tour went to Asheville and the band made their first appearance at the City Auditorium. I suppose in a way this was probably our first "venue" page but was basically a story from a fan that posted in the guestbook 10 years ago when we had one. see
http://scottymoore.net/asheville55.html

After dates in Roanoake, VA, Raliegh, NC and Kilgore, TX they were back in Shreveport for for the Hayride and then a couple dates in Houston and Tyler. On the 25th and 26th they were in Meridian for the Jimmy Rodgers Memorial Festival, an event was actually the birth of the CMHOF and instrumental the formation of the CMA. You should read this page http://scottymoore.net/meridian.html

After the Festival they made appearances in Texarkana and Dallas before winding up in Fort worth on the 29th for a show at the North Side Coliseum. see http://scottymoore.net/FtWorth.html

By now Scotty is using the Echosonic he ordered in January and only got a few weeks earlier. It is almost legendary in its own right. read about it here http://scottymoore.net/echosonic.html
Image

Since that picture of Scotty and Elvis in Breckeridge showing the amp went over so well I thought you might like to see a few more (courtesy Steve Bonner) from the same venue, the American Legion in Breckenridge, TX on June 10, 1955. Though not exactly a venue page, see http://scottymoore.net/deanbeard.html

On June 20th and 21st the boys played Beaumont, TX for the first time. Last weekend Bobby Dean, a local, sent me some stuff on the auditorium there so I did up a quick venue page. see http://scottymoore.net/beaumont.html
Image

Most of June saw the boys revisiting venues they had played before around Texas, Mississippi and Arkansas with a few exceptions. On the 23rd they played two gigs in Lawton, OK. see http://scottymoore.net/lawton.html
Image

On June 26th the boys hit Biloxi on the Gulf coast, first for a gig at the Slavonian lodge followed by two days at nearby Keesler AFB where Elvis would first meet June Juanico. See http://scottymoore.net/biloxi.html
Image

Not exactly Big Jack's, but they wound up June of 55 with two days in Mobile, Alabama at Curtis Gordon's Radio Ranch. see http://scottymoore.net/mobile.html#RADIORANCH
Image

Around this time Elvis and Scotty got new guitars. Elvis got the Martin D28 and had a tooled leather cover made for it. see the details at http://scottymoore.net/55D28.html
Image

...and on July 7th, Scotty traded up too and got the L5. Just in time to record Mystery Train at Sun. see http://scottymoore.net/54L5CES.html

In case you wonder where these guys bought their instruments back in the day check out this page http://scottymoore.net/okhouck.html
and check out the addendum http://scottymoore.net/okhouck2.html
sorry to say that Sid passed away earlier this year. In addition to being a wealth of information he was a really great guy http://scottymoore.net/sid.html

Early in July saw them at several venues in Louisiana and Texas and then aside from Hayride commitments they were on vacation for two weeks. The recorded their fifth and last single at Sun though they made at least one appearance at the Joy Drive-In Theatre in Minden playing in front of the refreshment stand. see http://scottymoore.net/minden.html
Image

The last week of July in 55 saw them back on tour in Florida visiting man of the same venues as May: Fort Myers, Orlando, Jacksonville, Daytona and Tampa. This time with Ferlin Huskey and Marty Robbins they were support acts for Andy Griffith. This was the tourbook: http://scottymoore.net/AndyGriffithshowpbook.html

The last date on the July '55 Florida tour was on July 31st in Tampa. There the Colonel hired Tampa photographer William V. "Red" Robertson of Robertson & Fresh Photographers to take a series of photos of Elvis, several you've seen already when we covered this page http://scottymoore.net/FtHomer.html One of the photos, known as the "tonsil photo" would be used quite extensively for advertising and still is. Its not this one, but one very much like it (see the http://scottymoore.net/FtHomer.html#tonsil).
Image

In August of 55 they played Tupelo at the fairgrounds for the first time, though they didn't make as big a deal of it until the following year, then Muscle Shoals and back to Little Rock (http://scottymoore.net/littlerock.html) and Camden (http://scottymoore.net/camden.html) Arkansas. On the 5th they were back in Memphis at the Overton Shell where it all started, this time newcomer Johnny Cash was also on the bill. Memphis photographer Robert Dye took some classic shots there that day and would later take more than a few more. Note the missing bridge pins already. see http://scottymoore.net/overton.html
Image

By now Johnny Cash had signed with Sun and had appeared on the bill with the boys at Overton Park. He would share other dates along with other Sun artists too. A few months back someone sent us some unpublished early pix from the cousin of Charlie Feathers and after we put them up they've made the rounds since but this is the original source. see http://scottymoore.net/MtPleasant.html
Image

In case you are wondering, Johnny is playing the Martin that Marshall loaned him and Luther's Silvertone amp is just visible off stage on the right. These
Image

Also, this was in the Memphis paper the day after the shell show Image

And this is Johnny, Luther and Marshall at Sun, colorized no doubt
Image

The day after the Overton Park show they were in Batesville, AR for the White River Water Carnival (http://scottymoore.net/batesville.html) and then on the 7th they were back in Houston for return appearances at the Magnolia Gardens (http://scottymoore.net/houston.html#MAG) and Cook's Hoedown (http://scottymoore.net/houston.html#CHD). At Magnolia Gardens a family with a new 8mm home movie camera captured some of the show in color film which they kept on the shelf for years, see the links.

On August 8th they started a week long tour with the Browns in Texas promoted by Tom Perryman. The first stop was in Tyler for their third and last appearance at the Mayfair Building. see http://scottymoore.net/tyler.html
Image

On the 9th the tour took them to the Rodeo Arena in Hendersonville and on the 10th they were at the Gladewater Baseball Park, see http://scottymoore.net/gladewaterBP.html. Here's Elvis signing a ball there.
Image
In later years he would sponsor a team in the Whitehaven Junior Baseball league and would also be a patron of various local teams. He would bring a ball to a championship game for good luck, signed by him with "Good Luck" and the championship title. The team would later sign it themselves and return it.
Image
Image

On the 11th the tour took them back to the Reo Palm Isle in Longview, they'd finish up the week the next night in nearby Kilgore. see http://scottymoore.net/longview.html
Image

On the the 13th they were back in Shreveport for their Saturday night Hayride commitment. see http://scottymoore.net/shreveport.html
Image

On August 14th the boys attended the Brown's parents 25th wedding Anniversary. Red West had been traveling with them for sometime now also. See this page for captions and citations http://scottymoore.net/gladewaterMC.html#MTR The following day Elvis would sign a contract with the Colonel officially naming him a "Special Adviser." The game was afoot.
Image

On August 15th the Colonel essentially and officially took the reins with the signing of the contract making him "special adviser." It would be downhill financially for the band from here. see http://scottymoore.net/specialadviser.html
Image

On August 22nd they started a week long tour of Texas in Wichita Falls at Spudder Park with several of the Hayride acts including Johnny Horton and Betty Amos. see http://scottymoore.net/spudderpark.html
Though he had played with them on many dates already when there was money, earlier that month DJ became a regular member of the band thanks to Scotty and Bill who paid him out of their cut since Elvis didn't want to spend the money.

Woohoo, 500 likes and counting! Thanks for your patronage.

compared to the 8,399,669 that EPE has we're a bit behind. I'm going to get Scotty to start selling Scotty Moore rubber ducks.

Now if you tell a friend, and they tell a friend... http://scottymoore.net/like.htm

On the 23rd the tour hit Bryan, TX, see http://scottymoore.net/bryan.html
Image

On August 24th the tour took them to Davy Crockett High School in Conroe, TX. Recently deceased Country legend George Jones was a walk on that night and got a contract with the Hayride. see http://scottymoore.net/conroe.html
Image

The next day, the 25th, the tour took them to Austin, TX, their second appearance in the vicinity and the first and only at the Sportcenter see http://scottymoore.net/austinSportcenter.html The building itself would later become the Armadillo World HQ
Image

The tour wrapped up on the 26th in Gonzales, TX (sorry, no venue page for this one). Ticket's available at KCTI Radio.
Image

On August 27th they were back in Shreveport for their Saturday night commitment to the Hayride. Much to the dismay of the "special adviser," Elvis would soon sign for another year with the Hayride. see the page http://scottymoore.net/shreveport.html Most of you have probably seen that page already so here's a nice large copy of a photo from sometime after the events in question, courtesy of Ger Rijff.
Image

On September 1st they were in New Orleans at Ponchartrain Beach. Here's another large picture courtesy of Ger Rijff. Its cropped though, the full version shows Scotty packing the gear while Elvis poses with the other performers (recognize anyone?). See it here and the history at http://scottymoore.net/pontchartrain.html
Image

On the 2nd they played Texarkana. More on that venue at a later date but here's a photo for now courtesy of our friend Steve Bonner. Note the clothing and Charline Arthur's guitar. On the way there Scotty was driving Elvis' Caddy and got into an accident. I suspect they were rushed onstage when they finally arrived. You can here them plugging this show with Bob Neal on radio on this page http://scottymoore.net/BobNeal.html

As previously mentioned, by this time DJ was playing as a regular member of the band though in the coming weeks he would undergo gallbladder surgery and miss almost a month of touring. Yesterday's photo(s) in Texarkana are the earliest we know that show him with his legendary Gretsch drumset. see http://scottymoore.net/gretschdrums.html for more about them
Image

On September 3rd they were back in Dallas for a show on the Big D again (see http://scottymoore.net/sportatorium.html ). Not too long ago a program from that show was auctioned off that was signed by the band and a lot of the other artists. click here to flip through the pages of it http://scottymoore.net/55BigD.html — in Dallas, TX.
Image

After the show that night at the Big D on the 3rd they played the round-up club in Dallas, a "reputed" former hangout of Bonnie and Clyde's. See http://scottymoore.net/sportatorium.html#roundup
Image

After Dallas they played shows in Forrest City and Bono, AR and on Sept. 7th was back in Sikeston, MO at the Armory. Johnny Cash was touring with them also and Elvis had just bought a 54 Yellow Cadillac convertible. see more pix and the story here http://scottymoore.net/sikeston.html
Image

On September 8th their tour was back in Clarksdale, MS for another show at the auditorium. Again, Johnny Cash was on the bill. This is Elvis with several fans there, see http://scottymoore.net/clarksdale.html for the details.
Image

After Clarksdale they played McComb, MS on the 9th, the Hayride on the 10th and then spent Sept. 11th and 12th in Norfolk, VA. By now they were getting top billing (but they still misspelled Elvis' name on occasion), see http://scottymoore.net/norfolk.html
