OK, I finally caved and created a Facebook page specifically for the website. This will facilitate notifying only interested parties, and possibly more of them, of any new additions or updates to the site (I'm not planning a whole lot). I will likely continue to notify you all as I do now but "like" the page anyway if you have facebook and this way you won't miss any. Recommend it to your friends too if you would. If there are enough likes from new fans I can always regurgitate and promote some of the older pages there. Check it out at http://facebook.com/ScottyMooreWebsite

Thanks,
Jim

No problem Mike, even if you don't have FB you can see the posts here
http://scottymoore.net/like.htm

I figured it might be time to add a content post so added this one yesterday.

Recently I was corresponding with Bill Black's daughter Nancy and we were talking about the Starlite Wranglers and I sent her this picture of them at the VA Hospital in Memphis. One of the first pages I added to Scotty's site when we started it was a quick one about them. I thought it fitting to kickoff the first content post here with a link to that and a nod to them Check out http://scottymoore.net/swranglers.html

Before all the fuss, Scotty was "Jamming on the USS Valley Forge." One great thing about the site was that it enabled Scotty to reunite with some old friends. Check out the story(s) in this link.
http://scottymoore.net/valleyforge.html

When Scotty got out of the Navy he bought a new guitar, though he didn't keep it long. see http://scottymoore.net/52esquire.html

When Scotty got the Esquire he also got one of these and would use it with the Wranglers and his first year with Elvis. see http://scottymoore.net/52deluxe.html

Scotty's Fender Esquire was short lived and he'd become almost synonymous with the guitar he replaced it with.
see http://scottymoore.net/52ES295.html

Sam had Scotty audition Elvis at his home, which was July 4, 1954 and the next day they went in to the studio to hear what he sounded like on tape. You know the rest... check out the page on Sun http://scottymoore.net/studio_sun.html

Thanks Jim!

That whole section on Sun and the Presto and Ampex gear is priceless! (along with receipts, etc)

Great story about the Esquire too - too bad it wasn't the same.

Until Elvis learned to work the crowd it was often Bill that got them warmed up. He used to leave his bass at Scotty's house lacking the room for it at home. When they started out he used a Kay Concert model see http://scottymoore.net/kayconcert.html

They had a record, now they needed a name (Blue Moon Boys), and a manager
see http://scottymoore.net/contract.html

We know that at least soon after the boys started performing Elvis was using a Martin but as yet we've not been certain what guitar he might have used first at Sun. Its possible that it was the Tupelo guitar and some believe this might be that http://scottymoore.net/ep46kay.html

Now with a record and a manager it was time to make a debut. The first official public performance was at Overton Park on July 30, 1954. see http://scottymoore.net/overton.html

One of the next gigs turned into a regular thing for several months close to home. see http://scottymoore.net/eaglesnest.html

Sid said he sold Elvis his first Martin, which would be this one. It is hard to tell but it looks like he may have had this as early as the first Overton Park show, or borrowed one like it. see http://scottymoore.net/00018.html

The content of this page, among others, gets stolen and reused a lot, sometimes copied with permission though. Just the nature of the beast. Anyway, this was one of their very early local gigs and as you'll read, inspiring to some other local musicians. see http://scottymoore.net/katz.html

This was a chapter from Peter Guralnick's book "Last Train to Memphis" that was published in the LA Times reprinted with Peter's permission. It describes the bands show at the Opry and transition to the Hayride check it out at
http://scottymoore.net/hillbillycat.html

here's a Commercial Appeal article from October 14, 1954 announcing the debut on the Hayride the following Saturday.
Image

Peter's story was of the transition from the Opry to the the Hayride, the next in the sequence is the Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport where the Hayride was held. check out http://scottymoore.net/shreveport.html

Here's a bit of history about the song on their first record
http://scottymoore.net/thatsallright.html

Work! Work! Work! Things were looking promising so it was time for the boys to take a chance and quit their day jobs. I'm taking a moment from mine to tell you about their's. see http://scottymoore.net/dayjobs.html

Bob Neal took Elvis across town to see Eddie Arnold at the end of October. There he first met the Jordanaires and more importantly Oscar Davis ... read on at
http://scottymoore.net/oscardavis.html

Another person they met at the Eagle's Nest was Biff Collie who booked the boys for their first of many gigs in Houston, and possibly their first in Texas. First stop, the Paladium... see http://scottymoore.net/houston.html

Stuck in "Shreveport" with the Memphis Blues again. Tom Perryman came to the rescue and got them a gig at the Mint Club in Gladewater to at least get them enough dough to get home. This was questionably either their second or first venture in Texas. I've no way to be certain. see http://scottymoore.net/gladewaterMC.html

This gig was in a town with a big Blues history. Some of the eye witness account details are questionable but they read well. check it out at http://scottymoore.net/helena.html

What about Bob?
A new year and a new manager. We drop his name a lot, its about time we expanded on that. Get the backstory here
http://scottymoore.net/BobNeal.html

Its also around the new year that Elvis got himself another Martin
http://scottymoore.net/42D18.html

Sometime before Elvis got his newer Martin, Bill got the Kay Maestro that is now owned by Paul McCartney. For its history see http://scottymoore.net/kaymaestro.html

The Day the Music was Born
One of the first gigs of the new year was the first of several in Lubbock, TX, where their sound would change the course for several in the audience... read on http://scottymoore.net/lubbock.html
Image

OOBY Dooby! The day after their first appearance in Lubbock they played another venue for the first time and their connections there would be instrumental in developing someone else's career. Check it out at http://scottymoore.net/midland.html

At the Crossroads - well, in Clarksdale anyway. Advertised as "The first time in the Delta" see http://scottymoore.net/clarksdale.html
